I then tell him "It is just like piano, except it isn't black and white keys." He gets it.

I then ask him if he wants to start taking piano lessons again, but he doesn't.

So much talent and no real desire. I told him years ago that I would give him my 1957 Gibson if he learned to play the violin. He passed on that.

He is also almost 6' tall with long legs and is pudgy at 150 lbs. He has bike racer written all over him and has not desire to ride either.

    Sigh.
Why not ask him if he wants to play the guitar?

What is he interested in musically or not?

He'd like to play the guitar. But to play it well it must be rebellious. That doesn't work if Dad buys it and shows you the chords and blues scales.

Make him pay for lessons or just get some books. There's more than one way to go about it.

I always wanted to learn to play the drums, but my parents said I should play guitar instead. Wanted an electric, got an acoustic. Now I have a few guitars here and there, but don't really play all that often. I would like to, but I think I would have been much more religious about playing the drums. My brain just thinks in beats...

I'll pay for piano. (And I did for years. He got pretty good at it.)

    I'll pay for violin.

But guitar is something that you have to want so bad that you earn it yourself. It is the proper way.

I bought my first guitar for $15.

I bought my Gibson in an original hardshell case for $75 in 1967. I was 13 years old and saved up money from mowing lots of lawns and shoveling snow from lots of sidewalks.

It's an instrument, just like every other one you mentioned.
I think you're romanticizing how you got there. Doesn't have to be the same for him. If you want him to play and get interested in it and he wants to as well, the mechanism for getting there shouldn't be the focus as much as the end result.

You're right though... You gotta want it.

That's just this village idiot's opinion.

Though, I do seriously wonder what would have happened if I'd have picked up the drums. I still want to some day...

i want to play the bass

i've been playing piano since 5 or so.
in high school I had a teacher that taught my chord theory, scales ect. Haven't had a teacher since.

while I can still play a couple classical pieces it's mostly by memory.
my sight reading is really shoddy but i can play an Fb minor 7 or G13 without having it spelled out for me.

often times when jamming with my dad (on guitar) I find myself mostly interested in my left hand, which makes me want to explore the bass

    Really now?

Dan Savage thinks you should mix it up every now and then.

    I had to google that.

In all seriousness, I feel like many jazz pianists neglect their left hand and display excessive virtuosity with their right hands. To their credit, you don't need to use your left hand a whole lot as a jazz pianist with a full rhythm section.

Personally I most enjoy playing the piano as a rhythm instrument. Less is more most of the time for me. See two posts up

I consider myself very lucky to be alive in Chicago (Southside, of course!) in the 1960's so I got to hear some genius music in small venues. It was mostly older black folks and a few white kids in the audience. They thought we (the white kids) were nuts so they left us alone.

It irks me no end that Jimmy Page, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, and Eric Clapton are filthy rich and the people that are the true source of that beautiful music are not.

Listening to Rush live from the Hammersmith Odeon in London, February 20th, 1978....

I'm going to get weird looks from the co-workers...

And damn has Geddy's voice mellowed as he's gotten older...Either that or his pants are looser

They're consummate musicians. But Geddy's voice, mellowed? When I saw them on the last tour his voice sounded like it was cracking, really sad actually. But they'll be back in my neck of the woods in November, and they always put on an excellent show.
