I wasn't in the mood to produce a ton of power. My neck was hurting too (old injuries), it took four ibuprofen tablets this time

Dunno if it's the lack of the pannier's weight and air drag, or not having to dress warm, or just the "performance-mode" mindset of a weekend ride. But whatever the reasons, that's a nice change from the 17-18mph averages of my after-work-into-nighttime expeditions.

Nice sunny weather, currently 77°F/25C. I put a couple quarts of Gatorade on the sport-touring bike, plus a third bottle with enough powdered Gatorade mix to make two more quarts, and headed out to the rest stop about 35 miles from the city, where I brewed up my Gatorade mix and headed back.

As typical, I reached the turnaround point at sundown. It was 84°F when I started, but there were some chilly pockets of air in the usual places, so I rode back in my jacket, then threw on a base layer before the final descent into Spokane.

Kind of a shake-out ride. Man was it windy! Wind coming from the east...we were headed right into it, when he said something about going behind me. I said, "why don't you go ahead?" It was almost like the wind disappeared
We checked out a crit course a local group uses, and he wants to go back tomorrow for speedwork. Not sure I'll like it, but figure that's good for me. He may do a real crit on Saturday, but I decided to pass on this one (I'm still very new to cycling, think I'll stick with tours/century-type stuff for now).

I gave one of my waterbottles of Gatorade to a hitchhiker early in the ride (he later waved as he went by in someone's car). So I drank less, but came through fine on just two quarts of Gatorade (I mixed up some powdered Gatorade at the turnaround point) and the good karma points.

I've been slowly getting better. The first time I did this hill last year I had a 6:02 time. Yesterday, 4:02 (2 minutes off). My ultimate goal is to be able to do this hill in 3:15
I weight 175 lbs right now and I suspect my ideal climbing weight is somewhere between 160-165 lbs.
Still feeling like crap but got a short ride in. I did manage to take a KOM from a buddy of mine though. I only had to average 322 watts for 11:47.

According to Strava, I averaged 271 watts for just over 4 minutes on my hill, and I felt like I was going to die.
Well in all fairness you probably weigh a lot less than me. I weigh about 205 pounds, my 4 minute max is 400 watts though.

I don't have a power meter, so I suspect Strava might be underestimating. Someone who weights about the same as me (180-199lbs including bike) on the same segment came in at 3:29 and 415 watts (if there is a lightning symbol next to the wattage then it came from a power meter). The segment is .6 miles and an average of 8.5 % (with sections of 16-17%). I don't think a 130 watt difference would only make a 30 second difference.
Either way, I'm going to ignore the watts until I get a powermeter. As long as I am faster than I was last time and keep getting faster I'm happy.
