Anyone have some good road bike routes in Surrey BC?

I've just started riding again and I find Surrey is an extremely boring place to ride so far. I typically get around 13km and get sick of the surroundings. I don't really find traffic a problem, though some of our side streets need to see a sweeper come through on the shoulders.

I have plotted out a 45km ride, give or take, down to Boundary Bay Airport and back up River Road, but if there are more scenic rides within surrey itself that would be great too.

Currently I'm close to king George and 72nd ave.

Thanks for the suggestion, maybe I'll ride out there someday, but for a simple ride close to home that one is a bit out of the way.

But you're planning a 45km ride anyway. 45km from Surrey can take you right into Vancouver itself! So Ft. Langley is not far.

And if you feel riding around Surrey is boring, you should visit Whalley.

Right, what I'm looking for though is more of a route I can take that's close to home for when I just want to go out for a short ride. I'm going to check out fort Langley for the next "long" ride. I'll probably end up taking the Sky-Train to Vancouver a lot this summer.

here are a couple of maps of bike routes in surrey. there are some nice places to ride, quite close to where you live. Green Timbers is a nice place visit, or go over to the Watershed Park off hwy 10 and 91 for a bit of exploring.

as for avoiding Whalley, i've lived here for the past 30 years, seen lot's of changes. there are a few streets to avoid - same as some parts of DTES of Vancouver, but Whalley in general isn't all bad.

Getting to Vancouver via skytrain is great, but if you have a few hours extra, you can explore the Central Valley Greenway (CVG - parallels the Millenium Line), or the BC Parkway (BCP - follows the Expo Line) that will get you all the way downtown from New Westminster. There are some hilly parts, and some parts that bring you along traffic lines, but the ride for much of the travel are on protected paths and majority are paved. on the CVG there are a few stretches that are still under construction and some spots that are gravel pathways, but there is no traffic to contend with.

Connecting to the CVG and BCP from Surrey - you can either bike across the Patullo, or if you want to avoid that, jump on Skytrain and out at Columbia or New Westminster stations. Of course, if you want to avoid hilly parts, skytrain stations closer to your end points won't hurt much either.

Hello a1rabbit....I live in N Surrey near Guildford, I often ride from home to Ft Langley. I've ridden King George to Creasent Beach and White Rock a couple of times, also there's down to River Rd and over the Alex Fraser Bridge, rode that one yesterday up to Central Park, then down to NewWest and back. Highly recommend you avoid this ride on a roadbike. I just rode Barnston yesterday after not having been there for several years. It's a great ride on a mountain bike, beautiful and scenic, but far too bumpy on a road bike. It's aggregate pavement and is broken up from years of erosion.

If you just want a casual ride in Surrey, there's an off-street bike route that sort of parallels 96th Ave. I also recommend taking one of the quieter streets down past #10 Hwy and finding Station St., that descends to a quiet Colebrook Rd. This is a good way of getting to White Rock.
