Found some old racing photos - cool stuff

I finally found the box of old racing photos that have been hiding in the basement. These are from a Michigan Ave. race in Chicago circa 1980? Enjoy.

It's quite remarkable, how similar those bikes look, at a glance, to the bikes I ride daily (less commuting accessories, of course). I suppose most C&V regulars can say the same thing.

Here's another. John Howard in a cyclocross race, Austin Texas. Its amazing how well these snapshots look when you copy and enlarge them. This was 1977 I think.

Some of them could be the same bikes we ride!

Big chainring, thanks for posting the photos.

    Couple more pics.
This is the start of the Michigan ave race. Thats Danny Van Haute with the white cap on and all the way to the left is Roger Young. They used to be an awesome team race/Madison pair on the track. I like the old style CTA bus in the background also.

Bell Helmets circa 1977. I'm in the second row with the white cap, white jersey w/blue and red sleeves. Starting a race in La Crosse Wisconsin. I finished second that day and was moved up from Senior 3 to 2. The guy first row all in black is Les Barcheski who was a National Champion sprinter.

Only way I could tell the Doering bros apart was that Gary had gold Galli brakes. I remember them coming to blows more than once at the Wednesday night races in the SW 'burbs (in the industrial park). That white Paramount Danny's riding was repaired twice at our shop, he kept forgetting the bike was on his roof rack and he'd run it into something, we'd turn it around in a few days and send Schwinn the bill.

Hey, I raced those Wednesday nite races too. I hung out and traveled with the Doerings one year. They were interesting, never a dull moment.

Here's Jeff Bradley sucking my wheel, I think it's Superweek 1977, we were 1st year Juniors. I'm riding Mark Mueller's old frame, he sold it to me after he started Phyduox (or how ever you spelled it), before he started working for Schwinn. The picture was taken by Mike C, I think he's next to Les in the striped sleeves (in your picture).

    ^Were you a Junior in that photo^? I think I remember you. I was 1st year Senior in 77'.

Looks like Van Haute just barely in the frame behind.

Edit: Just reread your post. You are a Junior there. Do you remember Matt and Andy Carren?

Matt and I traveled to many races together including the 78 Jr Worlds trials in T-Town. He's a year older than me, his little sis was a hottie!

Yep, I couldn't remember his last name correctly, thanks. He was on our team and a very nice guy. Do you know where he is these days? I think he worked for a Quad Cities newspaper, back in the day.

I just looked at some of your old posts, you have a picture of him, number 74! Who could forget that face....

The last I heard he was working for a paper in Brown Deer Wisconsin. It's a suburb of Milwaukee. I haven't heard from him in a long time. I still see Jeff Bradley a lot and ride with him once in a while. His new team is Velosportiowa.

Wow, Those are cool pics of a great era gone by. Those are very local to you guys, but back in 83 I was a jr. here in Los Angeles. I remember reading about guys like Jeff Bradley and Roger Young in Velo News. They were already establish National riders or coaching. I still remember that name, Les Barcheski, I saw him in the 7-11 velodrome in 1983 and 84 here in LA.

Yeah, talk about an era gone by. I could race from April to September on $500. The entry fees for an entire week of racing at Super Week was $30.00. I cant remember what the cost of staying at the dorms in Milwaukee was but it was really cheap. A plate full of pancakes at the Big Boy was about a $1.50. Gas was cheap especially if you drove with other riders and split the cost.

I raced Criteriums on Sunday, Kenosha track on Tuesday, Wed. nite training race in suburban Chicago, Northbrook track on Thursdays. It was a great time. And the Wed. nite training races would attract riders from all over. I remember one night Mike Neel shows up in his Magniflux jersey. Junior track events at Northbrook around Nationals would have fields of 80 riders. Good times.

The good old days had their dark side....The events at the MSE dorms, the Springer/Brandt suspensions. I'll never forget the 1978 National Time Trials at Port Washington. I had to coast across every intersection and time my crossing with 55mph cross traffic. I came back and told Ron Boi about it, the next day the Men's National Champ was broadsided by a truck and almost killed (spent months in the hospital, never recovered to race again). In my opinion, looking back, it's clear to me that two Jr National Champs used PEDs back in 1978/1979 (I was at the OTC Christmas of 78 with all the top Jr riders). I wonder how many of my fellow Jr competitors from 77~80 blood doped as members of the US 1984 Men's Team...and went on the help the next gen cheat.

I didn't let my kids race bikes, they always wonder why...Our sport has always been rotten.
