In praise of Poundland Hi Vis jackets

Just out of curiosity I bought a Poundland, (a chain of shops where everything is £1) Hi Visibility jacket, bright green with a couple of bands of reflective tape.

What's great about it is that in order to get the price down the jacket is made of a mesh rather than a solid material, so it does not flap around a lot as the wind passes through it, nor does it make you hot and sweaty.

There isn't enough material to do the vest up at the front, but I am much less worried about cars in front, as I can see them.

Since wearing it in the dark, I have noticed cars leaving a much greater distance when they pass me by suggesting that they have seen me much further away than was the case with just lights.

Yes,hi-vis jackets and gilets are a great idea.Its a pity lots of riders put a backpack on top of it.;-)

Its partly that they see you further away and partly that they see that you have made an effort to be seen so you get more respect than someone wearing black.

Most of my topcoat clothing is High Vis and my problem with this would be the flapping about as it does not do up.

The idea of mesh seems good as it will not trap moisture inside- but still feel that a top layer that will be high vis and be practical would be better--Like a Pertex to keep out the wind- or a waterproof to keep you dry.

May cost more but the poundland jacket would be of no practical use to me.

Coming to the thread a little late i know, but if a hi-vis vest is only £1 then it means they are pretty cheap to cut up and make into jackets for a backpack.

Putting a vest over myself and the backpack challenges dimensions in all sorts of unfortunate ways, putting something over just the backpack means it flaps around and may shift. But for the sake of a couple of £1 jackets I can butcher up something designed to fit the backpack and if it all goes pear shaped then I'm down less than the price of a pint.
