for Queens Village to Astoria, I have used a combo of Roosevelt Ave (not very safe riding) and the Greenway trail from Kissena Park

(arbitrary starting point) enter Greenway at Alley Pond

follow Greenway to Kissena Park exiting the park onto Bowne Street

stay on Bowne until you can make a left on Roosevelt Ave

follow Roosevelt to 108th Street and make a right

turn left when you reach 34th Avenue (bike lanes!)

    turn right on 81st Street

follow 81st Street to the end, zig zagging right and then left into a major intersection, over the highway, and past the Airport and it curves and forks into Ditmars/19th Ave

you can connect to most parts of Astoria from Queens village this way.

*Edit: this route is approx 13 miles

Looking for a nice ride in Queens, NY

Hey everyone. I am looking for some nice routes to ride in Queens. I am located in the Flushing/Whitestone area. I currently ride along the Cross Island Parkway, which is a fairly short and boring ride.

    Please help me out!

Basically runs from Cunningham Park to Flushing Meadow Park. You can start on the old Vanderbilt Motor Parkway in Cunningham Park.

    ^^^what he said.

    then you can do this

follow Greenway to Kissena Park exiting the park onto Bowne Street

stay on Bowne until you can make a left on Roosevelt Ave

follow Roosevelt to 108th Street and make a right

turn left when you reach 34th Avenue (bike lanes!)

    turn right on 81st Street

you can connect to most parts of Astoria from Queens village this way.
i also recommend finding your way to the exit from Corona Park near the New York Hall of science, 46th avenue. take 46th avenue to 108th st, 108th to 34th avenue, 34th avenue and follow the rest of the above directions.

depending on your range, another maybe 3-5 miles north and east, say ditmars to crescent and you can cross the 59th street bridge and knock yourself out on the east riverbank, west side paths, or central park, amongst other places. But astoria itself is worth checking out down by the park, get some mr softee from the comfort of your bike, he parks between the bridges....

From the 34th Ave. bike path to the Thogs Neck Bridge, once around Flush Meadow Park and back home. The bike path is on sections of the old Motor Parkway. It really shows the diversity of Queens from the dense urban environment of Flushing to the beauty of Alley Pond Park and then the water front along Little Neck Bay in Bayside. You could also visit Fort Totten http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/forttotten.
Here more information on Alley Pond Park http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/alleypondpark Alley Pond Park offers glimpses into New York’s geologic past, its colonial history, and its current conservation efforts. Because of its glacier-formed moraine, the park has numerous unique natural features, like its freshwater and saltwater wetlands, tidal flats, meadows, and forests, which create a diverse ecosystem and support abundant bird life. http://www.examiner.com/cycling-in-n...o-bike-reforms

Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan urged enthusiastic members of the city’s largest recreational bicycling club last night to “demonstrate your support” for more protected bike lanes, the coming bike-share program and other benefits that have been implemented by the Bloomberg administration over the past five years, and promised still more reforms to come.
Sadik-Khan, a rock star among cycling groups but a controversial figure among others, paid a much-anticipated visit to the New York Cycle Club’s March meeting at Annie Moore’s pub in midtown Manhattan. Her bicycle and pedestrian coordinator Joshua Benson and other aides accompanied her.

When the crowd of several hundred people greeted Sadik-Khan with a prolonged standing ovation, she thanked them and asked jokingly, “Want to come to a City Council meeting?”

Her message was mostly upbeat: “We’ve come a long way, but we’ve got a long way to go.” A year ago, she pointed out, the city was experiencing a “bike-lane backlash.” But “cycling has enormous support” in the city, she said, quoting polls that by last October showed 72 percent of the population in favor of the bike-rental plan. (She did not mention that the same poll showed residents split almost 50-50 on additional bike lanes in their own neighborhoods.)

You live around my area... I'm in Flushing too, maybe we can ride together. I'm thinking to take a trip to to Long Island if you're up for it. 40miles round trip. I'm not the fastest rider, avg 13-15.

I live in Astoria so I prefer the bike lane along the East River.
Have no idea when they'll fix the 59th Str Bridge bike lane. Hope will be soon. I use it frequently.

You can find riders with variable abilities on the 8AM group on Saturday and Sunday.
However, the 8AM group tends to vanish during winter months.

    Bump!

Hey everyone! I've just gotten back into riding these last few months and am having a blast exploring Queens!

After riding around the lake in Kissena Park for what seemed like 8,435th time I finally followed the greenway onto the motor parkway into Cunningham and then Alley Pond parks. I think the fact that you can ride on this road that is over 100 years old and was used as a racetrack and by bootleggers and socialites (not in that order) is amazing. You can even see some of the original concrete posts off the path that are still there, more than 100 years later!! I've ridden through in the dark a few times, approx. 10pm in winter time, was completely empty and was a blast just flying through and not having to worry about any other people. A little creepy in the dark, particularly the underpass under the Clearview Expwy; it's just complete darkness, no lights or anything. But, still really fun (and probably illegal at that time). I imagine in the summer though that there may be some people around after dark.

Finally had the courage today to go from work in Manhattan (40th St. & 1st Ave.) to home in Flushing Queens (LIE & 164th St.) via the Queensboro, errr, Ed Koch Bridge. Queens Blvd. is pretty intimidating. I have to leave some more time on the next trip to scope out some of the side streets and such.

Some photos I've taken along my riding travels:

Pretty cool! I can't imagine QB at rush hour. If you liked the Vanderbilt Greenway, you'll probably like Forest Park, it's gorgeous.

Forest Park is nice but its definitely a detour if your heading from Midtown to Flushing. I would taken 34th Ave to Flushing instead of Queens Blvd. Less traffic.

I wholeheartedly suggest getting a NYC Bicycle Map. See the link:

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bic...bikemaps.shtml

Updated editions are printed every spring. They are very easy to understand, show bike lanes, include a subway map, bike shop locations, points of interest, etc. You can create rides by 'connecting' paths. I find the map very inspirational!

Bike shops give these maps out for free. Someone already mentioned the Vanderbuilt (motor) Parkway path. I recommened that route, too.
