got all the bags and another water bottle and cage! I crashed for the first time in 1 and a half years today, but it wasn't my fault. traffic from behind passed me and cut me off turning right. I hit the side of the car crashed and they kept driving. I saw where they went though and got a cop and went to their house. It seems and ol' idiot can get a driver license these days! Only thing that got scraped was my left knee. My 520 was just fine (thanks to my Ortlieb bags). Oh the wreck happened a half block away from my LBS!

There is a lot of Idiot car drivers out there that will run over you in second. Also there is a bunch of weekend warrors Idiots on the bike trails. Like familys with 2 to 5 kids out there on there bikes riding in all derections, circles and right in front of you if you do not watch it, you have to be carefull. They do not know proper trail rules nor do they care. Had a group of 5 or 6 pull in front of me just yesterday they saw me comeing didn't care then talked crap to me when I asked if I could get by them. Happens more and more everyday here where I live, plus they throw trash all over the place with no respect for the bike trail system.

Nice looking Rig it looks great, glad all is ok.

I understand what you are saying about the rules of the trails, and roads for that matter. My twin girls have just learned to ride, but have been with me all the time. I took them to closed parking lot, set up cones, and showed them what to do in different situations. Then I ran behind them (while pushing my son in jogging strolle)r all the way home (they weren't going fast anyway) and gave guidance to them about if another cyclist is passing, what to say if they're passing, and how to signal. When I got home, my neighbor asked what I had been doing, so I explained, and he said he thought that was sort of wasteful! And yet another person to watch for.....

That is awsome, I did the same kind of thing with my boys when they were younger now 27 & 22. I wish more would do the same. I do not have a problem with kids, family's or jogger's or follks going slower on the bike trail. I just wish everyone would play by the rules so it is all good and safe and enjoyable for everyone. And about your neighbor there are a lot out there like him, clueless that is why we have these issues in the first place on the trail and with adults, adult parents and there children today..

Fully loaded I average 11mph. Hills are a beast with all the gear, but with my new gearing it is manageable. I want to find a truck weigh station and see my total weight.

you carry a whole lot of gear too. Im around 60 pounds, I rode 60 miles in 4 hours yesterday.

Yep. Glock knife. I use it as my camp knife, latrine shovel, and for splitting wood. I like to keep it handy because some areas of the trail have a dog pack problem.

did a 120 mile trip in 8 hours of ride time in 2 days! Did some bike camping/training. Got 34 days before I leave on my CC trip. I could have gotten better time but it was the guy riding with me first time riding that far ever.

Did a three day trip to the river, wanted to go rackless. Not ultra light, about 18 pounds of gear not counting water. If I took my hammock and light bag instead I can get it down to 12.

Thanks. I leave in 29 days for my CC trip. I'm more anxious then nervous! I feel really confident in my ability to ride across and over any country! Just got a new camera yesterday!

I use that as one of my S24O camps, along with Jordan Lake SRA and if I have a long weekend Little Pee Dee State Park down near Dillon, SC.

You might want to try a run up to Jordan Lake, try and route through Broadway, NC the hills around there will give a workout, they are fairly short but steep.

yeah Ill check that out. I plan on doing one more over night before I start on my CC trip. I don't own a car a ride everyday. My commute to work is 8 miles both ways. And I got 3 hills that are 10 percent inclines or better. But yeah definitely gonna look into that thanks!

Here is a picture of my bike on my cross country trip when I stopped in Eastern Colorado:



There was still a fair amount of room in the rear panniers. I mostly got the front ones to even out the load. The dry bag on the rear rack held a small backpack (I'd take out when going into restaurants) and things like a windbreaker, etc.

Rear rack is a very old aluminum Blackburn rack. The front rack is a Jandd. Panniers are Ortlieb Classic rollers. I also had a sort of small handle bar bag.

Just finished my first true tour, 1000 miles across 3 states on this, my new Salsa Vaya. The biked performed admirably, not a single mechanical issue.

I have never seen front panniers and front rack. They are not widespread in Russia. I use two kinds of rear panniers. This is double volume 48-liter panniers.

Asphalt, I looked at the other pictures on the site you linked to. It sure looks like a nice trip, but I can`t understand Russian at all! What are the stone ruins starting at number 71? Temples, maybe?

Hey it's my first post to any of the forums! My son and I are leaving on or about June 5, San Francisco to Delaware. We may target Coney Island as our initial Atlantic Coast terminus. Here's my Soma Saga, unloaded. Once we're under way, I'll post loaded pics.
