V brake 26" to 700 conversion pad plates.

i have'nt been entirely happy with the caliper brake on my new rear 700 wheel, yes, it looks sexy there, but does'nt work as well as i like.
being upside down, back to front, the cable line not so good,
and then i saw a pic of a V brake conversion plate, and thought, screw it, back to V brakes !
so made up two plates, such a simple idea, whosever idea this was, a big thank you from me !

Thanks for the pic..... I've been thinking about going 700 for some time but the brake was always the problem. I was trying to figure out how to move the brake - not how to mod the brake.

for my homebuilt, i welded in a new brake bridge, but was'nt happy with the movement of the caliper brake.
so back to V's, they work as well as they did with a 26", so happy days !

Something to consider would be to use Pauls Motolite brakes. I used them on my Strada conversion 559 to the 700c and they can be mounted in the same place as the original brakes without rerouting cables. Also was used on the rear conversion on my Rans Formula.

mine just cost me a few pennies for nuts 'n bolts !

did you swap to canti/short pull brake levers?

Seems with the reduced leverage from re-positioning the pads, you would want to re-gain that leverage with short-pull levers.

thanks, if i come across some at the scrapyard, i shall certainly look into changing, to see if it makes a difference.
cant say i notice any at the moment tho ?

hi dugan, if you go forwards a few pics on my flickr set, you'll see the flat ali/alu bar i started with, just drilled and filed and cleaned up, then painted, really very simple !

I agree that the solution works, but also that it'll get much less leverage, and braking power than a stock set-up. For the cost of a bit of welding gas, you could knock the old canti posts off and reposition them; which seems like a much better solution than your kludge.

Archimedes would suggest you've roughly halved your braking force.

lol, urrrrr.......dunno, all i do know is it works for me !

i'm technically minded enough to tinker and get it working, but not much mre !
most of the parts come from the scrapyard, so gotta work with what i get.
and i did'nt like the look (or price) of that mavic brake adjuster thing !
