Nice bike!

That 7-shaped seat post is an older style. I'm not sure when that went out of style; 1930's I would guess.

At any rate, Nottingham means Raleigh; so your bike was made by Raleigh and it should have a Raleigh serial number.

I have not been able to locate a serial number yet. Any idea where it would be. The bottom bracket does not seem to have any markings unless they have been covered in paint over the years.

Here is a better picture of the seat:

The pedals look like '50s. From what I gather Rudge was a flagship brand of Raleigh, the really nice ones had a fancy chain wheel with the "hand" in it.

Rudge Whitworth originally from Coventry were bought by EMI and relocated to Hayes Middlesex 1937, before moving to Nottingham and being bought by Tube Investmests (Raleigh) in the 50's. (not sure if the merger or move came first). The machines were still branded as Rudge after the take over for some time.

I'd guess this is an early-mid 50's model, but not unlike anything made in the preceding 10 years.

Nice find! I bet it will be a great ride.

Is there an oil port in the bottom bracket?

@Chas - thank you for the input sounds re history and early mid 50s model. I will hunt for the serial number...
@RaleighBikeGuy - I will go over the bottom bracket again looking for an oil port. But there is some sort of port on the right side chain stay. I have no clue why it is there. Any ideas?

Given the appearance of this Rudge, my first inclination would be to examine the left of the seat lug and the bottom bracket for a serial number. One or the other should offer a serial code of some kind.

@kurt I'm going to check the seat lug right now. Bottom bracket does not seem to have any letters or numbers on it.

@Chas yes it does have an oil port. Here is the picture I just took.

Looks like late-1950's Raleigh production with that oil port on the BB shell.

Here's a 57 Raleigh Canadian with the same chainset, mudguards and pump guard. Same bike, great quality ride too.

Also, those Dunlop rims are Canadian sized. They take 700c tires.

@ kurt - you are on the money in regards to the serial number on the left side of the seat lug. As far as I can tell
it is BE and then under that is 6187. I can't tell id they are six's or eights.
Here are pictures:

@kurt - using convention #2 for serial numbers because of the BE in the serial number, it seems to be a 1951 model. Does that seem right?

I got it with a '57 TCW so I'm assuming it's original. No one was likely to add TCW aftermarket. The saddle is a Wrights.

One slight difference, yours has wire stays whereas mine are solid. It was typical for Raleigh to "downgrade" parts or accessories on their other marques, although Rudge was always considered to be a top tier brand until near the end of production.

And the 14 40 stamped on the Perry Coaster brake should relate to the number of (spoke)holes; i.e. 40

Waverly610, thanks for the info on the Perry Coaster brake. Do you think it is original to this bike?

Nice bike! I have a Rudge Sports from about 1961. Lately, it's my daily rider.

The 1947/8 catalogue shows a loop frame ladies roadster 22" frame 28" x 1 1/2" rims, single speed, rim brakes, black with gold lining.

The 1957 catalogue shows no loop frame models available, so this machine must be c1949-56 vintage

Wow, the blue paint seems to have held up very well over the years. Wonder if they stripped most of the red off and shot it with automotive paint? Rattle can should have faired much worse. Maybe it was a well-done brush job with someone who knew how to brush with good epoxy paint and not leave brush marks.

Looks nice. Even the fenders seem to be rust-free in the insides. It's a rare bike that I find even from the 70's that isn't rusted a little in the inside of the fenders. Must have been some good paint!
