    Shopping online within the EU

When purchasing items online do you still have to pay tax and duties if it's within the EU?

It's 'distance purchasing' if you do it online or over the phone same rules apply.

Excise duty is charged on things like tobacco and booze and you're unlikely to be buying them on the internet.

The VAT rate you pay seems to depend on whether the vendor does a lot of business with the country you're in. If not you'll probably pay the rate in the vendor's state.
If you think this world is sane you're mad

It's pretty much immaterial whether "origin" or "destination" vat applies: rates on bike parts are pretty much the same in major eu jurisdictions (there are no duties or taxes on bikes or bike parts in intra-EU trade apart from VAT). The important thing is that it's the seller's responsibility to settle the VAT: the price you see on the website (inc shipping, obviously) is the price you pay. You don't get hit for anything more once you've paid the supplier. I have often bought stuff from german websites (eg bike24 and rose versand): they tend to have a better range than uk sites and better prices, and the shipping is little more expensive and very little slower. And a special word for laufrad.net if you want wheels, especially dynamo wheels.
