So, now we need lights to find our shifters and to tell us what gear we are in??? I guess I don't get it...I have bar ends, I know where they are in the dark and I, like most of us, know what gear I'm in at any given time... it will have the 'neat' factor though I 'spose.

I glue protruding pieces of PVC onto my gripshifts. They help identifying the gear not just during the night, but also during the day, in that I can figure out the gear by touch. During the day, at times you cannot afford taking the eyesight off a situation and there may be noise and/or vibrations associated with the surface you are riding on, limiting the use of sound and/or how the drivetrain feels. I guess I am not like 'the most of us'

Looks cool, however since getting a road bike without gear indicators I find that I don't care what number gear I'm in, if it feels right then it is the right gear!

Yeah, I'm not sure why I care what gear I'm in. I'm either in a gear that feels right or not. If not, I shift.

Judging from these posts, the markings on the shifters indicating gears are pointless. However, curiously somehow the manufacturers find that there is some market for those. Otherwise, they could have lowered the cost of their products getting rid of those digits, pointer windows etc.

I think this is very cool.
Useful? Maybe not for most people, but when riding in the dark I tend to every now and then put my hand above my diy dyno hub powered led front light in order to "reflect" some light on my handlebar in order to check what gear exactly I'm riding in.
And on top of that I know how good it feels when one can see the result of a job well done. Congrats and thanks for sharing this.

for a while when night commuting I used to miss being able to visually confirm the rear gear I was in but soon became accustomed to riding without the info. I was thinking about some way to illuminate my derailers.

There's not a lot to light up on most bikes. Unlike a car. But I've wondered why bike manufacturers don't use reflective material for printing their logos and such, for the decals or stickers on the head tube, top tube and down tubes on bikes. It seems to me that being seen is a universal safety concern.

Hmm... if there was some market for that, these would have been presumably available, like the comfort saddles. Instead we have additions that augment the gear info such as Ci-Deck and Dura-Ace in-line gear indicator.

I think its wrong to assume that everything on a bike is there because there is call for it from the market place. For instance, when was the last time you met a cyclist that wanted his bike plastered with the names of manufacturers, yet every bike produced comes covered with this crap.

To a great extent the only choice a consumer gets is to purchase a product with ...... or go without the product altogether, so how do you know when consumers have chosen to go without a product altogether?

IG hubs are ideal, in this regard, ratio sequence is linear, and does not need lit windows.
a 3 follows 2 preceded by 1, and so forth..
lit windows is , as are the windows themselves, a gimmick .
watch where you are going, instead.


When It is Raining Heavily, Cycling year around , I have a cycle rain cape over My handlebars ..
covers My bars and Hands ,which then saty Dry.

But as a Ex Navy Bridge watch, at least red preseves your night Vision,
for sailing on a moonless Night, of course every Vessel has Running Ligts on it
to be seen and see other vessels .

Not true on Bikes , ninja suicide riders, at night, are out on the streets.

It'd be cool if the illumination made you more visible. Having finally switched from contacts that wouldn't allow my eyes to focus on the gear indicators to glasses that will, my being able to read the numbers at night is a novelty now. And I use the helmet mounted light to illuminate the numbers, I can't be the only one doing that.
