I've only just discovered how good the National Cycle Network is. The routes around here are so well sign posted I need never get lost again!
Anyway I've been doing some of route 10 and found some parts pretty rough (almost gravel tracks) and probably in mountain bike or at least hybrid territory. Is this typical for the national network? Do those of you with road bikes use the network or avoid it?
Also on a side note, does anyone know of an android app that shows all the routes so I can track my progress? A mobile version of http://www.opencyclemap.org/ would be the ideal. Perhaps there's a layer for Google Maps?
I find that the national cycle network is rather variable. Some bits are very nice tarmac covered old railway lines, some are more gravel covered paths and other bits are suitable only for mountain bikes.
I often use http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/ to plan routes which is basically google maps with aditional cycle routes and contour maps. Incidentally the bit of cycle route in the above photo bikeroutetoaster refused to plot a route across.
I biked the western section of Hadrian's Wall on the national cycle network during the summer. I found your signage was very good and helpful. Being from the states, we thought we were going to get lost but the signs popped up when needed. We had hybrids with fat tires. We hiked the middle section - very nice area! We made it over to your neck of the woods by car, bus_ter.
