    Paved Paths In NW? Help, Please?

    We're familiar with a few PAVED paths:
    1) Mosier to Hood River
    2) Centennial in Spokane
    3) Tri Cities, WA paths
    4) Portland Area paths

    But can you let us know where more are? Particularly in the Leavenworth/Wenatchee and Bend areas. Like 20-25 mi rides but 10 year old impulsive, so traffic not best plan.

    Thank you!

    Beautiful 17 mile rails to trails path in Cottage Grove Oregon, Row River Trail. It gets very little use, so enjoyable riding for the whole family. Located 25 miles south of Eugene, trail starts in downtown Cottage Grove.

    Wenatchee has a trail that loops around both sides of the Columbia River. Maybe 7 or 8 miles total, but mostly off-street.

    http://www.bikewenatchee.org/ might know more.

    TrailBear can help. He rides nothing but Class I trails. Go to Traillink.com and start looking for rides. These are Class I trails.

    The Rails to Trails Convervancy's TrailLink is a national database of bike trails and more trails are added each week.

    Where do you want to ride?

    Wenatchee has the Apple Capital Recreation Loop - which is a 5* trail. You can check out my photos at

    <http://www.traillink.com/trail/apple-capital-recreation-loop-trail.aspx>

    Bend - you are out of luck. It's mountain biking. Very few Class I trails on the eastern slope of OR. Aside, of course, from Sun River, which has many miles of excellent trails. I park at the library and ride there when in the area.

    Redmond, OR, up the road has the interesting Dry Canyon Trail...

    <http://www.traillink.com/trail/dry-canyon-trail.aspx>

    A poster mentioned the Row River Trail - great ride. Add the Ruth Bascom Riverbank Path System in Eugene. Add the Banks-Vernonia west of Portland - kid will like the Buxton Trestle. There is a good 9 mile trail in The Dalles I surveyed last season. Get out to Pullman and there are good trails there.

    For the best Destination Trail in the West - Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes in the Idaho panhandle. 72 miles

    <http://www.traillink.com/trail/trail-of-the-coeur-dalenes.aspx>

    Next door is the Route of the Hiawatha - tunnels and trestles. What 10 yr old can resist these?

    <http://www.traillink.com/trail/route-of-the-hiawatha-.aspx>

    There is a lot of good riding in the Spokane - Silver Valley area. Spend a week and not even get started.

    Paved Bike Paths in NW

    Thanks for all the great information. I'm tucking it in our bike bag!! We have to stick to paved paths so far....and not into mountain biking at this point. Love the paths though.

    My personal favorite is the Tony Knowles Coastal trail in Anchorage!!!

    Happy Cycling!

    Centennial Trail in Snohomish County, Washington.

    17 mile section from Snohomish, north, and another section from Arlington, north; north section being lengthened now, and the south and north will likely be joined together by this fall.

    More Spokane/E WA/N Idaho area:

    Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes : Plummer, ID to Mullan, ID

    Fish Lake Trail: Spokane to Cheney and connecting to the (unpaved) Columbia Plateau and John Wayne trails. One section around Fish Lake itself still not paved.

    In Yakima, you can ride along the Naches River on the Yakima Greenway.

    In Pierce County, we like the Foothills trail, which goes through South Prairie and Orting, WA, and in Thurston County the 21-mile Chehalis Western trail from Lacey to Rainier and the 14-mile Yelm-Tenino trail.

    Also in Pierce county is the Cushman trail across the Narrows bridge => http://www.penmetparks.org/26501/295947.html

    Stunning views of Mt. Rainier, the sound and its surrounding islands.

    +1 on the Cushman trail, but it is a bit short. There is a rails to trails ride easily found near Orting, WA that is about 30 miles round trip in length that is quite popular. My favorite is the trails of the Coeur de Alenes about 72 miles one way , the west end is found in Plummer, ID. The east end is found at Mullen.

    In West-central Washington, Yelm to Tenino (just stay away on the STP ride's Saturday, unless you don't mind sharing with 10,000+ others !) (and, even if you do want to share, don't figure on riding north that day ...); and there's a branch off if it west toward Olympia

    http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/bike/statemap.htm will get you to a state of Washington map - focuses on roads, but also shows trails

    Also quite short (<2 miles) but if you happen to be in the city (Seattle) Interlaken is a great way to get from north of the Ship Canal up to Capitol Hill. That two miles is all quiet (basically zero cars*), two lane blacktop in quiet woods. Southern mile has a climb/descent, northern mile is pretty mellow.

    * About half of the road is closed entirely (but cycles roll on it all the time) and the other half is "local access only" for the half dozen homes that are scattered along the first and last half mile of it.

    Interlaken is an oasis in the city. You'll think you are on mountain switchbacks, no traffic noise from nearby you can hear, zero traffic**, decent surface*** and a little bit challenging and rewarding ride.

    ** On a sunny Sunday around noon I travelled Interlaken both directions. I saw one car travelling from one of the half dozen residences, two couples walking, two other cyclists and a handful of skateboarders. It took me from Roanoake Park to the ridgeback that runs from Capitol Hill down First Hill to the International district.

    *** Where the road is technically closed I encountered the occasional patch of ashphalt that sounded like the surface underneath it had eroded some. No problems rolling over it, just a little freaky hearing it settle, especially since for a moment it sounded like rolling on a flat tire.
    Tail winds and sunshine to you all!

    This site has lots of links to lodgings and camping along the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes. There is also a Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes Riders Facebook page with pictures of both the trail and trailside communities.

    This is about as good of list as I've come across. And I've ridden almost everyone in the Pierce, King, and Snohomish counties in WA. Her site focuses on paved trails. Jennifer has a really good resource here.

    @@@

    I've used this list and it has been a real help in hunting up trails that TrailLink did not have. However I don't think it is being currently maintained. It appears the last mods were in 2007. Hope I am wrong.

    TrailLink is current - and it is probably missing some trails. You can look and see:

    No she updates it from time to time. I post my experiences of trail rides and have corresponded with her. But she does it on her own time, so it's hit and miss. You just need to take the time to read through the comments. Anyway, I've found it to be a great resource.
