Athena Alyce and Herb First Time GMR (8 miles 2200ft) Wow, just Wow!
Totally amazing day on GMR! The amazing is that Alyce made her first journey up GMR to the shack. Not only did she conquer the mountain, she did it with ease. I'm sure she will say it was a good effort but the thing that gets me is that I waited and waited......and waited for some sort of resistance while climbing. A complaint, a whimper, a tear, but not once did she seem to be in trouble. Most first timers on GMR will offer a doubt after the first mile or two, Alyce just climbed like a champ!
I did plan a couple of short stops, strategically placed after having escorted a few newbs up GMR. I'm not so sure Alyce needed them but a good plan is a good plan and she absorbed every and any tips that was thrown her way whether it was offered by Gina, Herb, Eyemage (who later joined us with his entertaining comments) or myself. What a student, Grasshopper has flown! To ad to the experience, I'm sure there will be another visit to GMR within a week or two. She seemed pretty determined to do at least another 5 or 6 on GRR. My opinion is that she could have easily done so today but I was somewhat pressed for time and the shack is a great accomplishment for a first timer.
I will say that starting at 7 am was a good move that allowed us to avoid much of the heat. Nice day and lots of riders on the mountain. Minutes after reaching the shack, Randy and William roll up for a few words. Randy showing some kudos for Alyce's effort. That was nice and added to the celebration. Then off they went to the lifts. Couple of other riders are there so we take names and add to the photo album, Chris and Eric. Nice to meet you guys!
Glendoramntroad Blogger Gal rides up with Matt from a visit. Haven't seen them for a while so it was nice to visit. Matt always kind with nice words to describe my blog and GMR with compliments on my photography skills. Uh, not sure what she's talking about after comparing my prints to Mr. GMR's beautiful panoramic pictures posted on the GMR blog. Either way, it's always nice meeting these two and heir good words!
Another rider speaking with Matt mentions a triple century. I look over and the rider looks familiar but not quite sure. I did see a triple century post by another rider on the forums so I'm thinking "Pain Freak". I have to ask and yes, it's Pain Freak in the flesh! I need pics so I take a coupe of Eric and Chris but before I return to PF for a shot, the dude is gone! Wow that dude is not only fast, but stealth. He slipped out without so much as a peep. Sorry I missed the pic but I got the video ha ha! Nice job on the Triple and the five doubles PF!
So after a nice social gathering at the shack, we head down. Right about Newman's Point I hear "Beanz!". I circle around then roll back up for an introduction. It's Julius and friends. Sorry Julius, I'm used to seeing you on SART so forgive me for not recognizing you. Not having the kids and buggy threw me off, plus the heavy breathing and seeing double doesn't help ha ha!
Well, a great ride today and I still can't get over how easily Alyce climbed the mountain. Good job Herb and GREAT job Alyce! What did you have for breakfast anyway? Ha ha!
First 30 seconds is from the Eyemage Cam!
