I want to be able to put my head down and think of nothing and escape my stresses while I ride. This is not easy or responsible in high traffic areas.
Where are some places to ride in Tempe (or nearby) where I can zone out safely?

Umm, I'm not exactly sure if there is a "zone out" area available in Tempe unless you're running around Tempe Town Lake. If you'd like to venture out a bit more north, there is the ASU PISS route (sigh, wish I hadn't signed up for the team my last semester!). It's relatively quiet? I think you can find it on mapmyride.com. If you can't, PM me and I'll send it to you in a link.
Oh, and there is Silent Sunday at South Mountain. As long as you don't cross the lines, it can be a me and nature sorta ride.
More out of the way... The transition road from South 202 to Pecos is an ok road. I see lots of couples there going at their own pace. Turns into a nice straight 10-12 mile loop. There is also a Park n Ride parking lot.

Zone out + bicycle riding on any street sounds incredibly dumb to me.
Head north on Priest/Galvin Parkway to Osborn, then head north on 68th street, east on Lafayette, north on Invergordon. This will get you easily into Paradise Valley where there is a lot of great riding on quiet streets. You can climb up Humminbird, Sage, Superstition, Desert Fairways, etc.
