temp. was 51 for this mornings ride. it was great but i was a little cool in shorts and short sleeve jersey....also my hands and ears were cold. curious as to what others do for ears.....i dont think i can get a beanie type cap under my helmet. Gotta go pick up some pants, long sleeve jersey, and gloves.

Hair keeps my ears warm enough. I have some tights and leg warmers and long-sleeve jerseys and winter shoes I never have worn.
One experienced rider mentioned he makes a spreadsheet of what to wear for each temperature- so when the forecast says 40, you don't have to try to remember what it takes to be warm in 40 degrees.

The same headsweats skullcap I wear in hot weather keeps the tops of my ears warm in low 50's.
I also have a Pearl Izumi lycra skullcap that comes farther down on the ears, keeps them warmer and is very thin.
Hands will appreciate long fingered-gloves.
Running tights over the bike shorts are nice. They are just lycra with no fleecy hot lining and they are more comfortable (to me) than knee warmers/leg warmers. Also good for low 50's temperatures.
Either a long-sleeved baselayer under my short-sleeved jersey; or a vest over the jersey.
I've never bagged a ride because my arms were too cold.

Before old t-shirts get retired to the rag bin, I tear off their sleeves. With just a little bit of stretching, they fit perfectly under my helmet and over my ears. When it gets deeper into winter, I have an lightweight fleece beanie.
Either something like the micro fleece ear warmer linked above, or I like my SmartWool cap (which it seems they no longer make) in the winter months but can be a bit warm when it's above 55 or so.
I cycle in a speedo (jk)
a neck gaiter can work wonders. play your cards right, and it can oooch up over your ears too.
Here is a guide I put together when I first started riding. I was commuting to work 7 mile each way and had little in the way of cycling clothing (I still do, but I have some now).

I went out last saturday (12/10) afternoon at about 48-50° F. Base layer, long sleeve jersey, and windbreaker type jacket on top. Cylcing shorts, leg warmers and tights on the bottom. lycra earband, glove liners, and toe covers. Was just about perfect on the way out, the ride back was a touch chilly, but not uncomfortably so. I need to improve my cold weather gear a bit if I want to keep riding in less than the high 40's. Hoping to get some riding in over the holiday break. Spin classes at the Y are doing me good, but it just doesn't compare to a real ride.

Avoiding the chill this year is a priority with the addition of knee warmers , leg warmers, arm warmers wind and water resistant cycling pants. Also is a windbreaker jersey.
