I plan to cycle across Canada next year and I am thinking about using the Waterfront Trail east of Toronto to get me to Montreal. I have a series of questions that I hope someone can help answer. Is the route relatively straight or does following it add huge amounts of distance.? Are there some sections where nearby roads are better options. Is the trail surface suitable for fully loaded touring or are large sections soft gravel? Are there enough campgrounds along the route? Is there anything else I need to know about the trail. Thank you.
I've ridden the Waterfront Trail loaded several times. it's a great route. Getting out of Toronto it meanders a bit on various bike paths, but it's much nicer than the alternative busy streets. There area a couple of very short sections of soft gravel. Otherwise it's all paved. There are lots of campgrounds on the route. Everything you need to know is at http://www.hedney.com/waterfront.htm
