I don't ride much at night, so don't need a fancy lighting system. Use a head lamp for distance spotting and a powerful flashlight for proximity and redundancy.
Have any of you had experience with a mount that works well for holding a flashlight? The mount would be permanent, the light only when needed.

Same exact thing came with cheap flashlight I bought, and the mount is garbage. It attaches to the bars ok, but the stupid ratchet mechanism that is supposed to hold the flashlight will not stay closed & tight. Also, the steel hinge pins will rust in no time at all.

Ah well, I knew the odds were tiny that it would work, but for $1.50, figured why not. Thanks for the heads up. It's suppose to be here in a couple of weeks. I'll report back on my experience.
Actually, for no more than I need a light, my cable tie arrangement works fine. And, I've discovered, I can remove and reinsert the light as needed. The only down side is I'm using my gps mount as a base to do this. But, that's ok, as I don't use the gps much either. Double duty.

Actually, I've had what I recommended for months and had ZERO problems with it - in wind and rain, over bumps and potholes, across grass and cobblestones.
Darn Vras. Zero is good. Musta misplaced the link to what you recommended. Exactly where in your 5 posts is that recommendation? That $1.50 mount ain't likely to cut the mustard.

Thanks Silmarillion. Looks good for mounting anything needing extra bar space. I got plenty of bar space, but nothing to use for mounting a flashlight to said space. Other than cable ties. What with all the small, powerful flashlights out there, somebody oughta come up with a reliable way to attach them to a bicycle bar. Nothing terribly hard to manufacturer, just nobody is doing it. The gadget I ordered is probably going to be too flimsy. The reviews about one that uses velcro were not good.

I just use bicycle headlights which all come with quick release mounts. I've settled on Cateye lights - lights are interchangeable between the mounts on my bikes.

The $1.50 mount is installed. So far, so good. The flimsy ratchet strap does seem to be its weak point. Certainly nothing for serious night riding. I've booked this thread for future reference.

Look up twofish blocks. They stay put and work fine. Inexpensive too.
Quick follow up on drmweaver2's 0.99 flashlight holder. Amazingly, the thing works. I did secure the ratchet strap, its weak point, with a cable tie to ensure it didn't release. I've ordered one for a second light. With two Nebo Redlines up front, and my headlamp, I'm good to go. Be about 500 lumen's total at full power.
