Feb 2012: Oahu, a ride around the entire island

hey ladies and gents. I'll be flying into Honolulu on Sunday the 5th, riding the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th and relaxing and flying back to SF on the 10th. Its about 180miles and Ill be camping every night except the first and last.

Beware that the road/path by Keana Point is dirt and often muddy during wet times in February.

It also had one point (and likely still does) that you may need a rope or shoulder strap to carry your bike across what can best be called a very narrow, although short, goat path with steep drop off.

Waianae is the rough part of the island and maybe not the best idea for camping. Some camping areas require permit, obtained from the city in advance. For many parks, camping is prohibited to keep the homeless from setting up permanent residence.

thanks CB HI, Ive heard some tales of Keana PT's toughness and do plan on bringing a rope. about waimea- when you say "rough" what exactly do you mean?

I'll second the advice on avoiding camping in the Waianae area, way too much crime over there. Better camping would be at Barbers Point (a military rec area) or the county camping area next to it. Have you seen this information from the county on camping? http://www1.honolulu.gov/parks/camping.htm

So I did have to take my panniers off and front wheel and carry everything separately over that point on Keana . Phew. it was wonderful i was the only one for miles.
