What Are Your 2012 Goals?
This has been my first full year riding, so this is my first chance to create goals based on what I've done already. The mere fact that my list is becoming longer has inspired me to get off my butt and onto the trainer here in a few minutes. Maybe this thread will help others in the same way.
What are yours?
Some of mine are lifestyle things:
Quit smoking completely
Start doing group rides with a club
Some are time-related:
Sub-27 minutes up a 5.5% 4.5 mile climb (~250 watts / ~3.4W/kg)
Sub-37 minutes up a 8.0% 4.5 mile climb (~240 watts)
Sub-5.5 hour flat-ish century (riding time, with only necessary stops, hopefully sub-6 hour elapsed time)
Some are merely survival/completion goals:
Summit Mount Evans; 28 miles, 6,730 feet up, 14,121 feet max (never ridden above 12K)
Summit Trail Ridge Road; 24 miles, 5,100 feet up, 12,275 feet max
Do a mountain century with significant climbing (~7,500 feet)
Some are yearly totals:
4,000 miles
264,000 feet of climbing (50 miles)

1) Bike more than I drive, mileage wise.
2) Bike 5000 miles. In theory it should be easy to do if I start in March instead of May this time.
3) Drop below 300 pounds, but ideally hit 250 by 2013.
4) Attempt P90X in Jan-Mar
5) Do my first 200k by October
6) Get my century time down to 7 hours
7) Average 16mph on a 25 mile loop.
8) Get my average cadence above 90
9) Do more hills. No specifics yet, still trying to figure out what I should do.

I was just thinking I'd like to be able to average 25 mph for 20 miles. That's a good goal, right?

- 2000+ miles (approx 1200 this year, didn't get cycle computer until mid-June so only 950 recorded)
- Lose fat equivalent to the weight of my bike (30 pounds) before spring
- Increase endurance and VO2 max
- Ride at least two charity centuries (miles not km)
- Build a road bike (currently riding a flat-bar light touring/fitness hybrid)
- Find some decent hills
- Not be in the back of the pack on group rides

I'd like to win a cross race. I was sorta kinda close this year, enough so that I think I can do it next. I learned a lot about handling, strategy, pre-race nutrition and bike setup. If I can put it all together with some decent form - hopefully I avoid injury this summer - I think I might even have a shot at taking the series.
Go over 31km/h avg moving speed in a 200km brevet, with minimal time at the checks. Just enough to get my card stamped and go.
I'd like to do the same avg speed in the Tour of Victoria. I was oh so close this year.
Make a good showing in the local spring "Roubaix" race. I'd like to enter it at 150 lbs, fast and focused.
I'm considering a 600km event...it's not a goal though.
I'm going to do the local 'triple crown' - hit all three cat 1 climbs in one day. That will be a good day!

Uber Goober
Get a new bike, ride it for 10,000k in RUSA events, including a 1200k. It's actually more involved, but some details are pending that may change the whole plan.

1. Regain the weight I lost last summer back in muscle mass (I'm 5'9"; went from 148lb to 143lb after summer cycling, and would like to gain some back in the form of thigh and upper body musclature)
2. Beat the 50-mile at a time mark and make that a regular ride at least once or twice weekly.
3. Add another couple of miles on to my average speed - I just got back into it in late June, after a 21-year hiatus, and went from 13.5 mph avg to 16.5 mph by late October... surely, if I can get that far in four months, and can add at least one or two more this year.
4. Participate in one of the local event rides in September - either the MS150, or the BPS Fitness Festival 70-mile ride.
5. Wear down the mediocre tires that were stock on my 2011 Giant Defy so I can replace them with Continental GP4000 S's.
6. Go back to not caring about the whole carb/protein/fat ratio, and just eat what I need to fuel the old engine.
Oh, and 7. Consistently kick the ass of that ridiculously steep hill on Farm Road 115 - the one that kicked mine two or three times this year.

1. 2500 miles for the year.
2. Actually ride with a group (I have never done this)
3. Weight below 180 by the end of the year.
4. Record a ride in every month of the year.

Minimum of 6,000 miles (This year 4,000+)
Drop more weight ( This year dropped 40lbs)
Keep up with the fast group without feeling like my heart was going to jump out of my mouth.

1. Bike more
2. Run more
3. Get under 140 lbs (Currently 146 but these last few pounds are being a pain)
4. Continue the search for a riding/running partner
5. Contemplating swimming... but that's dangerously close to tri territory.
6. Do the Ormond loop in less than 1 hour (25 miles).
7. Ride an impromptu century just for fun.
8. Get a job as a fire fighter and finally quit Publix. (Really looking forward to this one)
9. I plan on starting cat 5 racing this upcoming January. So I guess my goal is to win.
10. I guess my final goal for 2012 will be to start adding new bikes to the collection. 1 bike just isn't enough...

Do at least three weekend bikepacking trips. Maybe the Great Allegheny Passage, Mickelson Trail in SD and ??. I love to load up the panniers on the Vaya and take off for a few days. The crushed limestaone rail trails are great. Not much traffic outside the bigger towns, plenty of camping, water, etc.
Do a few more local time trials. I'm 45 and not exactly Alberto Contador, but I'd like to average 22+mph on the 10-20 milers. Last year I was in the 21+ range. I did a 30 mile race this past summer adnd picked up 14 minutes over the year before, but I had some good drafting partners. TTs are a different animal out there by yourself.
I put on about 10lbs last winter. I dropped 11 so far since September, so if I could lose another 10 before spring....
Maybe just find some cool cycling related adventures. Last winter I went road biking in Alabama and Florida, mountain biking in Hawaii and I did a trip on the Katy trail across Missouri.
