It was my daughters birthday weekend so I could not put in a big ride but instead put in two smaller rides, good things with that heat on Saturday. Its funny how both rides had the same profile and elevation but 10 miles less. Got a few PRs as well!

Nice rides! Did you need a mtn. bike for the shorter one?

Hack yeah you need a mountain bike! I dont get to use it too often with my road schedule. It is a fire road that takes you to Joe Elliot Tree Memorial Campground. The frist half was warm up and the second doesnt stop. Offically from the sign it is 11.5 miles to the campground. I have yet to make it. It is pretty steep most of the way and golf ball rocks constantly. It really takes a different rythem to climb that. There is some shade and water but not till you get near the top.

Here are some pictures I took:
    1. Top of Lytle Creek and you could still see some moutnains poking through the fog.
    2. Sign, begining of the big climbing
    3. Towards the top, great view! (you can see the roads I was on below)

Awesome ride; any idea if would be doable with a cyclocross bike? If so, I may need to try to figure out how to convert my vent noir into a cyclocross haha.

I imgine you could ride up that, it would be difficult and you couldnt ride down it. I lost a water bottle on the way down yesterday too.

Yeah, I was going to park at Encanto that way after the ride I would just have a straight shot back to the car rather than having to climb the 20 miles back to Baldy Rd.

If you like we can meet at Shin and Baldy 7:15. I come from the East and you from the west. The ride does not start from Citizen Bank until 7 so they will be behind us.

Sounds good to me, maybe a tad closer to 730 because I'm not sure how long it will take to ride those 20 miles. I'll drop you a PM later in the week to confirm details.

^Scratch that, I just traced the route and it is 110 miles and 12000ft+ for me I want to take it a little bit easier then BA, even starting from Claremont wilderness and back is a lot. How abotu GMR to Crystal Lake and back ? I also have a hike planned for the following day to Telescope Peak so I have to save some energy.

I just checked with weather underground. The overnight forecast for Friday May 4th is partly cloudy low of 55f. Saturday is clear with a high of 77f. Hopefully, this forecast will hold up over the next week.

Hey guys! Breathless is next weekend! I can't wait!
I have been sick all last week(and I still am), so I am probably not going to be at 100% by the ride.

I just wanted to ask all those who have done the ride before what the temperatures are going to be like at the top. Are are warmers going to be enough for the ride?

Tomorrow is going to be the last day I can order anything online so, do you guys have any other suggestions for anything I could need?

I am planning to stay at a hotel the night before, so I can get a good amount of sleep.

Would it be a risky move to stay in Big Bear overnight and to drive out towards Redlands at 5 AM on Saturday? I'm uncertain about the drive time. It's only 30 miles from Big Bear to the beginning of the freeway, but it's a twisty mountain road.

Last year I only had a short sleeve kit and shoarts and was fine for the entire route (morning was pretty cold though)

Here is my ride for this last weekend, more climbing then I thought especially sicne I hiked Telescoep Peak the day after (3000ft gain, 14 miles 11,049ft). I forget how hard that last section before the turn off is at 5kft . I ended up running out of water so I rode to the gate instead of the two miles to camp and then descended to the ranger station to refill.

A couple of the times I've done BA it's been really cold at the top. Once I was so cold that my bike was shimmying on the descent because I was shivering so hard. That year I bummed a plastic garbage bag off the rest stop crew and stuffed it down my jersey to block some of the wind.

Current forecast for Big Bear and Angelus Oaks is 64, which would not be bad at all.

I rode highway 38 from the Mill Creek RS to Onyx this weekend. I put on a windbreaker for the descent, but it wasn't needed and as soon as I hit that short climb to Barton Flats on the way down, that thing was off for the rest of the ride. It was perfect weather. So far, it looks like the same for next weekend. Though I did see a 10% chance of rain on one weather site.

Last year when I rode this the weather was so drizzly in the mornign I could not see through my sunglasses once i made it into San Timteo canyon. But once we hit the Beaumont rest stop it was sunny from then on. (It was very drizzly at my house this morning along the foothills of Fontana)

Well it is done and I made it. Here is my ride for HB http://app.strava.com/rides/8939291

It must have been the hardest easy ride I have done. It was the fastest ride of the 3 rides, I used my small ring (tripple) the least and I am sure I would have used it even less if I did not have an epic Bonk (probably heat exhaustion). Not only did I hit the wall I flipped over it figertively. The first half was pretty easy and the down hill was great. Cought a group of guys and we blasted down the last part. Then the flat into the second SAG was pretty good but that is when I was starting to feel the heat.

I dont think I ate all that much deffinitly drank more but maybe not enough. The SAG stops had very little of a selection with the exception of the energy powders. I would say 70% of the food was a peanut product (alergic) but luckliy I had my own. Climbing Heartbreak Hill really was not that bad of a hill but the heat was cooking me and I was taking refuge at the few trees that gave of shade.

I kept riding but I really didnt have much in the tank, after that hill I couldnt eat or drink much. I would say the last quarter of the ride more water went on top of me then inside. Finailly the 1% downhill with a head wind and a few hills was all that was left. Made it up the first hill but by the time I came to the second it was time to stop....and puke, basically nothing. That made me feel better but I still commited teh cardianly rule in my book and I walked about half a mile. Finally made it do the last 10 miles that was all down hill which ment that I didnt have to pedal any more.

Past one lady, she asked if I saw that person on the side of the road and asked if he was alright, I yelled that was me! lol. She passed me back on the down hill. Big thanks to Bored (Jin) who road with me the last half and kept me going. I told hm to go ahead but he stayed loyal. We made it back to the start and both finished the KOM.

Deffinitly not going to do all three in the same year again but maybe one of the three from time to time, deffinitly HB and BA agony again, MC hurt me but I will come back some day. I really want to help out also. Next rides on the horizon is Ride around the Bear, Cool Breeze double and Tour de Foothills.
Anyone know of a Olympic Triathlon in November?

Lesper, my polar said the temps ranged from 61 to 96 with an average temp of 78. I thought the weather was quite perfect, but it did get damn hot going up Heartbreak. I went through all the Endurolytes I brought plus a bunch from RS3.

It was my best ride of the three. On MC I struggled but finished; I don't think I wasn't quite ready (longest training ride was only 75mi with 8k of climb). On BA I started cramping before Angelus Oaks, so my time stunk and I was just happy to finally meet the grim reaper at Onyx.

Heartbreak went really really well. I went in with a goal of 8:30 and I finished in 7:44 and my time on the bike was 6:50. There were some faster groups that passed me on the run into RS2 that I tried tag along with, but I figured I would pay the price on Heartbreak, so I just rode my own ride. That downhill from Apache Saddle, even with the couple of "bumps" was a blast. I hit 49mph without even really trying.

I did not have any cramps until I was almost finished driving home. Inner thigh cramps in slow-n-go freeway traffic are not fun. I cramped during MC and BA, as well as hours later after all three rides. I ate and drank very well and never became dehydrated either before, during and after all three rides. On MC and BA I drank Perpetuem; for Heartbreak I switched to Heed. That seemed to help. But I've come to the conclusion that my legs just don't like riding mountainous rides longer than 75 miles. Perhaps some time in the weight room will take care of that for next year. I will probably try all three again next year.

And what a beautiful area to ride through. We passed the Sespe Condor sanctuary, but I did not see any of the big birds flying. There was still plenty of spring color around and the hills were still green. Pine Mountain Club looks like a great place to go for a weekend get away with nice road and mountain biking.

It sounds sappy, but I can't wait for my polka dot jersey to arrive. It felt great to set a challenging goal, put the work in and accomplish it. Eight months ago, a flat 25 mile ride was all I could handle. Now, I completed the KOM challenge.

Any ideas for tough rides in August? I have to set my next goal so I don't lose all this hard won fitness.

Congrats guys, that's pretty neat to do all 3. Mission accomplished!

Lesper, have you done a tri before? I keep thinking about it, but I suck at swimming and running seems so conducive to injuries.

cdp8, set a goal of doing an epic solo century out in the mountains. It's a whole lot cheaper and you don't have to get up at 5am to make the start. Between Baldy village, your car at the base of GMR, and the food shack at crystal lake it should be easy to formulate a route that'll challenge you while still being able to be self supported.

I did a Sprint tri in Fontana (Scott of Dons organzied it with the City) but it was just to short. I found three towards the end of the year. One near Magic Mountain, one at Bonelli and one in Malibu. All around 1/25/6 miles.

I think Tour de Bear is around August. Should be not too hot and nice ride around. Probably about 7000-8000 ft climb total is my guess. I probably will do it if I can match vacation plan with it and spend the weekend with family there for rest of activities
Didn't enjoy HB100 too much myself. I was sick for whole week, didn't get any training in for this, still was a little sick, and to top it off, the scenery and route was... a little boring for me. Oh... and the drive to there... 2+ hours one way unfortunately... (Suppose living in Riverside with that kind of scenery all over the place doesn't help). Hills weren't particularly challenging, etc. Maybe if my condition was better, might have been more enjoyable.
Gotta say, BBQ at the end was excellent though.
