we're getting closer to my ultimate commuter bike: 700c, drop bars, HYDRAULIC disc brakes, IGH, and titanium frame with fender clearance.

bikesdirect.com does sell a titanium cyclocross with disc frame and fork tabs and disc compatible wheelset, but comes equipped with canti's.

will anyone ever make hydraulic levers for drop bars?

You got an LBS with all those brands? in stock?

NB the early adopter needs a big wallet for any of the cable to hydraulic conversion
schemes , to have brifters and hydraulic discs.
Boutique small German shops,+ Hope, UK and TRP all put that part alone
up to several hundred bucks..

Indeed, the frame is lust-worthy however the rear drop outs is 130mm spaced and uses a 130 hubs. Me thinks 135mm will be the rear disc hub standard on future road/cross bikes. It's already an established standard.

i'm not looking for hydraulic brifters, just a standalone hydraulic brake lever that can fit on a road bar without needing any kludgey cable-to-hydraulic converter mechanism.

when will manufacturers make those? they make hydraulic brake levers for flat bars, why won't someone make them for drop bars? is it really too much to ask?

Market survey, and see what the market demand is..
Consumer goods manufacturers respond, to sufficient consumer demand..

or have great sense that the demand is untapped, risk the money and give it a go.

for now you maybe a demand population of one.

Cyclo cross racing is the market the parts I linked to, are meant to serve..
Those people run brifters, that occupy the space inside the brake lever body.

You need to go to trade show in Taipei, with a line of credit, some Drawings,
and talk to the movers and shakers in the industry..

In the Autumn, there is a EuroBike industry trade show in Germany
those pieces were introduced this year, there.
and one for North America, in 'Vegas.

Magura of Germany is a precision metal die casting company,
mountain bike brakes and M/C brakes are just Part of the company, for example..
show them the money and they can do the job too.

I'm slowly updating the OP with all the great new bikes you guys are identifying.

Since I'm still a budget-conscious student, I'm extremely intrigued by the Origin-8 CX700. Less than $200?!? I don't know anything about this company; is there a catch? When it comes to CroMo frames, I think Surly/Salsa, which are over $500. Hell, I even found Soma Fabrications for $450 (which also looks great, BTW).

Can someone please tell me what the catch is, there? I mean, it's less than half the price of competing frames! Also, what's up with that 132.5 mm hub spacing? They're claiming it will fit 130 mm and 135 mm hubs...is that actually true and/or acceptable?

BTW, yeah 132.5mm rear spacing will fit both 130 and 135 mm hubs. No prob in my experience.

I have both the Soma Double Cross and the Origin-8 CX700. The CX-700 is a Monstercross frame.

I'm in the process or building-up the CX-700.

The Soma is better all-around, but won't take silly-big tires for singletrack or winter trail riding. I got the Soma down to 22 lbs and the bike was a fast century bike, the CX-700 would fail as a pure road bike.

The CX-700 is cheap enough to have for fun, but a monster-cross bike will be slower and require more effort to ride as an everyday bike, I expect.

The CX 700 has huge flexability. It has fender & rack mounts that most MTB do not have. It can be a drop-bar 29er like the Fargo or Vaya. It can take Cantilever or Disc brakes. It can be a single speed or multi-speed bike. It can even take an IGH.

I'm going to use it as a test bike for winter conditions, touring and single-track.

But, it will be heavier and more of a beast than most CX bikes.

My experience is different, the middle measurement doesn't do either 130 or 135 perfectly. A little refacing of the dropouts was needed in my case for the axle nut/spacers to fit evenly, I chose to parallel match my 132.5 width dropouts for a 130mm hub. I'm probably in a minority insisting on that level of precision though.

What category is the Ruben to be placed in? Marketed as a cyclocross/commuter, mine is recognizable as a road bike with 25mm slicks, the genre blurs a bit with 32mm Cypres tires mounted, and one poster labeled it Monster Cross when I displayed it with wide 650b wheels.

I've heard other people have problems with the 132.5 mm sizing. I have a 135mm hub and it works fine. My points of reference have been old, much cheaper bikes, however, so I might have different standards when it comes to how a bike feels.

I think my Ruben can be placed in the cyclocross/commuter and maybe light touring category. For me it's my fun bike which means long road rides and occasional off-road dirt riding. I never ride it to work as my workplace is in a high theft area and I am a paranoid mfer (my old mtb gets to sweat it out while I'm working).

The OP is now updated with everyone's posts so far. I'm beginning to think that it would also be good to organize by frame type and cost, rather than just geometry. Maybe I'm just thinking that because I kind of like Excel.

Interesting info on dropout spacing...I have no idea what to make of it.

I used to see these at REI. It looked like a great all season commuter, that would accommodate studded tires for winter commuting and training. I might even have used it for certain cross races that are less conducive to to my usual SS cross race rig. I really wanted one, but they never had it in my size, and now I don't see them around at all.

The Monster-Cross group needs refinement. A Monster-Cross bike can take 29er tires in the 700x45 to 700x50 (or larger) ETRTO size range. Most of these will require a MTB crank and will not fit a road crank with a standard BB length.
