Just a head's up - the SGRT is closed and under construction south of Peck to the 4 corners area. Closed as in - the bike path has been torn out; they're starting over.
So - unless you're cool with doing a few miles on dirt, you'll need to adjust your routes accordingly.

I hit it from the south about two weeks ago just over the dam. You can ride just accross the water passage section and then they have barriers you are not suppose to pass about 100yds just north of the dam. I doubled back and went west on Beverly to the 710 cannal and down that to QueenMary, accross the front of LongBeach to the Riverend Cafe at Coyote trail end, then back up to Carson st area on the SGRT. made for a bit longer and fun adventurous ride- about 57 mile round trip
I should also note that last week there was a closure on Coyote trail just north of Ball Rd where they took the old bridge crossing out and have the entire section there shut down to bike traffic- you have to divert off and up around to I think it was Crescent St. where it continues better on the west side with the newer paved section heading North (the east side is junk heading North here).
I spoke to the construction engineer down at Rivers End Cafe (Seal Beach end of the Coyote and SGRT) and he said they have plans to rip apart the lower few miles (especially that nortorious section just north of the 405) and start repaving it just after the new year- could not give me an exact ETA though so just be aware of sudden closures- wish they would post this stuff better and give advance warnings like they do with public road closures with projected closure notices.
They've been talking about new pavement from the 405 to the beach for quite a while now. Even did some crack-sealing in a few spots, but never seemed to actually start working.

The state OK'ed funding to the city of Seal Beach on Sept 16th, 2011 for the repaving project of both the staging area (rivers end Cafe parking lot which is state owned) and the bike trail. This project started about 3 weeks ago and they are almost finished with the parking area. As stated already above, I spoke with the project engineer and he informed me they will be moving onto the bike path as this project progresses from the staging area. His ETA 2 weeks ago was some time in January 2012 to begin the bike path portion.
I personally can't wait. I ride this trail the most with 4 different variations that involve the notorious section of path between 7th st and the 405. It is so bad since the heavy rains about a month ago that I have been avoiding it and riding more in Irvine and such. I am not a big fan of SART, I just don't have any junctions from it to vary routes like SGRT and SDRT(Newport/Irvine area). The Aliso trail is to slow and winding down south for my interest. I park up a Saddleback College area and ride the upper portion sometimes up past Cook's Corner when i want a shorter workout- but my favorite day ride just getting out by myself relaxing is up SRGT to Beverly, over to RioHonda wgere I go back down that bueatifully paved 710 trail to LongBeach- then accross the boardwalk and 2nd st to Riverend Cafe where I break for a meal and relax to enjoy the day, then its back up to my starting point past that treacherous section on the Coyote Trail= but that is a great ride and a great way to pass 3 to 4 hours of a beautiful day.

Thanks to sakeed's last minute info, using Rosemead to Beverly worked well to bypass the construction for last Tuesday's run to Solana Beach from Pasadena.
I saw construction crews off-loading some heavy equipment today off of Durfee. Looks like they are going to be tearing up some asphalt and laying some new asphalt soon. I thought they would have been done by now. Hey, hopefully it's done soon...

There is asphalt laid on the north end just south of Peck. I started riding it, but got chased off by a construction guy in a truck.

He was honking the horn on his truck, gesturing wildly, and saying something. He didn't bother rolling down the windows on his truck, so I can't tell what he was saying. He honked some more and got more excited when I continued down the path, so I just turned around - I like to spend my riding time riding, not talking to crazy construction guys.Chased off? Went down Sipon road today, all the new poles are up, way up. Crews were still there doing stuff at the bases of the poles. Went to the top of Whittier narrows dam on the SGRT side. Since there is a lot of work being done the gates to the top of the spill way were open. I went out to the top part that is usually closed over the spill way on my mountain bike and saw that the new asphalt was layed down on the North part of the trail that is closed. When i went back i rode west on top of the WND to Rosemead Blvd, crossed, the rode over the Rio Hondo side of the dam as the gates were open on top of that spillway. Usually the gates are closed however they are open now for all the work that is going on at both sides of the dam. If they could keep the gate open on this side it would be an easy ride between the Rio Hondo and the SGRT, with only Rosemead to contend with.

Yes. Though it has clearly gone past that projection now. I notice several people have mentioned asphalt being laid down. I could swear the path was concrete through that whole section before.
