Weekend Cycling/Exercise Ride Reports - December 31, January 1, 2 ...
Happy New Year! It's been 2012 now for about 1.5 hours. This weekend, we're wrapping up our distances for 2011 and starting anew for 2012. Tell us about your New Year's Eve / New Year's Day rides.
Saturday - Rowan and I cycled 51 km in the afternoon/evening (when it cooled off a bit), bringing our weekly total to 363 km (our 3rd longest week in 2011), our monthly total to 1024.5 km (our 2nd longest month in 2011), and our annual total to 8006.6 (my greatest annual distance since 2005). 2011 was a good year for cycling.
Today was a bright, sunny and hot day that topped out at 30C. And I got a little bit too much sun out there. We forget how intense the sun is when it first really heats up like this. Tomorrow is supposed to be 33C, Monday 35C, and Tuesday 32C. Apparently summer has decided to show up.

My weekend didn't end. I was off the week between Christmas and New Year's. One of the local guys was doing 200k's every day, so Monday-Thursday, that's what I did. Then yesterday, I rode with Greater Dallas Bicyclists on a 45-mile route, and that got me to 1,000 miles for the month. I may ride some this afternoon, and haven't planned out tomorrow and Monday, yet.

After logging a whopping 14 miles and 22 miles on my two other previous December rides, I got out yesterday with my friend for a nice 48 miles south of Austin. It was a gorgeous day and a fine route...very little traffic, 72 degrees, sunny, light winds...perfect. Last year I helped my friend learn to ride out on the open roads of Austin...and she took to it like a duck to water. She's planning to cat up to Cat3 after her first race in January and wants to be a Cat2 by the end of the summer. She's also brilliant, having graduated top-of-class in high school, has finished her degree in 3 years at UT and is a Rhodes Scholar finalist. It was nice to catch up with her as we hadn't ridden together since the summer, although she did most of the talking since I was always trying to catch my breath!

Just spending some time with Spinervals and my trainer inside. It's cold, wet and icy out there and I'm a wimp.

We've cycled just about every day ... but definitely not 200K a day!!

...rode two rides today 12/31 in typical NE Ohio slightly drizzly weather and 41*. Could've been worse, but wasn't thankfully. Got in 30 miles total for both rides.

Sunday 1 January - No ride today ... the temperature topped out at 34C/93F for the first time in a very long time, and we made a quick trip to a nearby (115 km away) city to do some shopping instead. It was even hotter there!

On Sunday I rode 40 miles round trip on the Skyline Drive in Shennandoah. The weather very nice but above 3000ft there were some thin ices on the road which made the descent a bit interesting. On Dec 30, I rode the Mt Weather loop for the first time, it was quite a beautiful. I now know where all of the rich people live in western part of NoVA.

An hour and a half in the cold rain, little bit of sleet in Dayton, Ohio.

Climbed a nearby hill (dead end ranch road), 25 miles out and back with 2700' total climbing. New bike worked great. Perfect way to start the New Year.

Monday 2 January - The temperature hit 36C here today, so instead of cycling we opted to do something else ... we headed for one of the local outdoor pools and swam for a while.

Tuesday 3 January ... back to work today. Today reached 38C/100F ... a bit toasty ... but the heatwave is moving on, and it is a comfortable 29C now.
Today ... 3 km walk, 1/2 hour in the local swimming pool after work, and 25 km on the bicycle after the swim.

Finally got a good feel for my new Felt on the 1st. Only rode about 20 miles but it was a great ride. I bought the bike and had a cold going on and just could not enjoy it until this ride. Amazing how much better the ride is with a good fit and next size up frame. I wanted to ride the old bike but dreaded the aftermath of lousy fit that no matter what I did made me feel worse about the bike. This one makes me want to ride and I don't feel like I just got the beat down. Now if the weather would cooperate and the overtime at work would go away.
