Tandem - Front recumbent, back upright

I was riding on the Mount Vernon trail (Washington DC area) today, and saw a type of bike I'd never seen before. It was a tandem with the front rider in a recumbent position, and the back rider in an upright position. Front rider was a woman, the back rider was a man. Wish I'd had a camera and my hands free to take a picture.

Anyone know what kind of bike that might have been? It was cool.

that is a crazy looking bike. i bet it is fun to ride once everyone gets the hang of it.

Jeff, I think it probably was the Bilenky ViewPoint, but with straight handlebars in the back, not the drop-downs. But I admit, the Waltz in your pictures is cooler still. Steamer, the bike wasn't one of the ones in your pictures, but I liked the pics.

Switching handlebars is no big deal, and Bilenky bikes are full-custom anyway.

I rode alongside a Counterpoint Trio (the precursor to the Waltz) a few years ago at Portland's Bridge Pedal. The rear rider had a squirt gun, thus becoming a "tail gunner".

Seems to me that MBB front wheel drive for the front rider would be ideal on this kind of bike, with rear wheel drive for the rear rider. You'd then have independent transmissions for each rider, so you could both be in whatever gear you like.

Wow, I didn't know there were so many variants of this tandem. We have the Counterpoint Opus. This shows us riding in a July 4th parade with our son when he was still young enough to fit in a child seat. Fun times...
