Cars and TV cause heart attacks

On giving up:
Everyone knows that Christopher Columbus discovered the New World for Spain on his first voyage. But few people realize that on his 4th voyage, Columbus gave up, turned back and sailed for home; within 10 miles of where he could have discovered the Pacific Ocean.
Actually, the Interheart study is pretty big news. Thanks for posting it!
INTERHEART is a tremendously important study for a variety of reasons. Much of our previous information about risk factors was derived from developed countries. This study, in contrast, was performed in 52 countries representing every inhabited continent. In addition, unlike many previous studies, it had an adequate sample of women, and the researchers assessed several different psychosocial risks using a series of questions selected from previous predictive studies of cardiovascular events.

So y'all are telling me I need to get my arse off the new LaZboy sofa, turn off the TV and drive somewhere and get some exercise?
Too bad they didn't monitor internet usage![]()
BTW doctor busted me, now I am walking 2 miles a day, and riding MORE on weekends.

Of course. As we add more labor-saving devices, a species that has spent the previous 500,000 years constantly moving about has suddenly decided to sit still.
Could that ever work?
I read a science fiction short story years ago that covered that. Don't recall where or the author. It was probably in Analog. But the gist of the story was that the human race had evolved to the point where everyone lived in these little cocoons. Only at great expense and personal hazard would someone request a face to face meeting.

What about a study relating the number of heart attacks with the amount of internet use?![]()
No, I have read that one too...this was a short story. I have been reading Analog Magazine for over 30 years and have read quite a few back issues when I found them in libraries along the way.
The concept of cocooning isn't all that unusual, except perhaps for me...I cannot stand to be cooped up indoors for any long period of time, even less so when deprived of windows allowing daylight in. I am not claustrophobic, just don't like being indoors much.

Watching TV while driving a car will cause a heart attack.
"If we don't change direction, we will end up exactly where we are headed."
Cops and donuts, sitting in cars for hours, then chasing a perp in undershirt thru dark alleys.....that is a heart attack mill right there...

We give people bicycles....
Cars don't cause heart attacks, People driving them do!
