Giving up on flying with bike

Hey there, I'm in a bit of a hurry, but I appreciate any help. So I'm flying to SF Saturday to meet a buddy to ride for two days (from Georgia Tech, any GT Grads??) But even working for the airline doesn't help with the baggage situation (new co-op at Delta). After a few hours on the website and phone, looks like I have to pay $300 to bring the bike back and forth, so I'm ditching that idea. Is there anyone who'd be willing to let me borrow/rent a bike (and come with!) or has any suggestions on bike rental places?

    Thanks y'all.

    Love,
    Atlanta

These guys have a decent selection:
    http://bicyclerental.com/submain.php?category=rentals
    http://www.baycitybike.com/baybike/i...bike&Itemid=45

You could also ship it with UPS...you'll get full coverage with the contents. Or try these guys:

Always check what the baggage req. are before booking. Lots of airlines now even charge for your 1st checked (non bike) bag. Southwest is cool, bikes $50 per way.

Thanks for the help guys. Turns out I was able to find a good shop, Sports Basement, that gave me a nice Fuji Roubaix with 105 for $60 for two days.

I work for Delta, so I'm limited to that. They charge $150 each way for a bike! Renting was definitely the way to go. That shipbike website is pretty sweet though. I might use that next time. Thanks c0lnago.

Sorry Ygduf, I hate to be too forward. I'm a 56cm, I always assume everyone's that size anyway, right?

But all that kerfuffle aside, I had an awesome ride (check it), and I'll definitely be back to SF soon. There are bikes EVERYWHERE! Not at all like Atlanta. Beautiful city, beautiful scenery. You guys are so lucky!

$300 to fly a bike from ATL > SFO??? WTF???

I flew with my mountain bike from Stuttgart, Germany to Virginia for whatever the cost is for a checked bag (I think it was $70 US). Bike was in a EVOC bike bag which can fit my FS 29er.

I have made 12 flights (6 round trips) with my S&S-coupled Rodriguez fixie. Total cost: $50 (one of the flights was on United, which charged $25 for the first piece of baggage each way), plus one hour to disassemble and pack, and one hour to unpack & reassemble for each flight. Most of that time is spent wrapping the frame with the velcro-backed padding. With tools, spare tubes & folding tire, & shoes inside, the box tips the scales at 47 lbs, just under the 50-lb limit. If the bike had a cassette & derailleurs, it might be flirting with 50 lbs!

Presidio Sports Basement (http://community.sportsbasement.com/stores/presidio/) is indeed a good spot to rent a bike, start/ meet up for a ride, or pick up supplies. Glad you enjoyed your visit!
