    Newbie Intro

Hey all. I've been lurking here for months now, reading posts and learning a lot from the discussions. I thought it would be a good time to jump in and introduce myself, seeing as how I finally ordered my first "real" bike last week and hope to get back into shape after years of working as a desk-jockey and as a full-time college student.

Like a lot of kids, I grew up on a bicycle and even rode a quite a bit into my teens. I started riding again back in the fall, but my old Wally World cheapie mtn. bike is too small for me and was causing some knee pain; and it just wasn't comfortable or fun to ride. I'm 6'4"/285 lb. and I had to have something that fit. So, thanks to lots and lots of internet research, BikeForums and Clydes/Athenas forums included, I narrowed my search down to either a hybrid or cyclocross bike.

I went into my local bike shop last week to look at a 2012 Specialized Tricross and ended up ordering a 2011 Specialized Crux Elite for the same money. The upgrade in components was just too good to pass up for the same price. I can't wait until next week to get my new ride and get back in the saddle and start tearing up our local rails-to-trails state park and some local paved and gravel roads. In the process, I hope to get back in shape and lose a lot of the weight in the process.

Thanks to all who have unknowingly helped me in my bike search and thanks for letting me be a part of the community here.

I decided after riding my old cheapie mtn bike that I really needed more hand positions and the ability to get a lower profile in a headwind. I knew I wanted drop bars.

Welcome! I look forward to your "show me" posts.
"If you are someone who is scared, nervous or worried about what you look like on a bike.... I would strongly suggest setting up a time and place to ride with Neil. He is awesome to ride with, great conversation, and a great down to earth person. Neil made me realize that, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter when you look like cause you are there for you.... your health... and to have fun." - Chefisaac, July 11, 2011.

Welcome and good luck with your upcoming fitness journey. I've dropped 70 pounds or so in the the last eight months and cycling has definitely played a significant role. And it is by far the most fun way to burn calories I've found. Well, besides sex that is... Hope the wife isn't reading. That Crux Elite looks like a really cool bike. Enjoy it. Looking forward to the Pics.

As always, once you have your new ride, pictures are mandatory.
