Hi Everyone,
I'm originally from the San Diego area, but I currently live South of Seattle. I have an old Free Spirit three-speed from the 70's that I bought for $30. It's just like the one I had when I was a kid! Of course, I've spent a lot more than $30 fixing it up and making it reliable. I use it to commute a mile to the bus stop in the morning, and all seven miles home from work at night. On Sundays, when the bus doesn't run, I ride it both ways. My work is about 400 feet higher in elevation than my home. I also use my bike for shopping and local trips.
I started biking again after moving up here from So-Cal since I didn't bring a car, and I got tired of walking everywhere. My bike is funky and old, but I love it. It sits outside my job every day in the rain and never complains and has never been stolen. I'm 54 and I used to ride a lot in high school back in the 70's on a mid-range French 10-speed I had, including some racing and century rides. I rode a bit in Japan too, when I lived there for 5 years, but I stopped when I got clipped by a truck mirror on one of their narrow highways. I'm moderately handy about bike repairs, but most of my knowledge applies to bikes made 30 years ago!
I found the Bike Forums because I looking for advice about the right lubricant for the Shimano 333 hub on my bike. Not only did I find the lubricant, but I was able to down load a whole manual for the bike posted by RodoftheFlies (Thank You!).
I'm not sure how much I'll contribute, but I do appreciate those who do.
