Two questions about riding PCH #1 San Francisco to San Diego

1. After reading about the SART mugging problems, what unsafe areas should we concerned with while riding mostly Highway 1 ACA route from San Francisco to San Diego?

2. Would it be comfortable using our Keen cycling sandals in mid-April as long as we bring bootie/covers to keep our feet dry in the rain?

The only sketchy areas I am aware of on the whole route are:
Santa Cruz
Ventura
Venice
San Pedro

PCH is so well travelled at most times that being mugged would not be worry for me.
I would be more concerned with being taken out by a Winabago in Big Sur or by a careless 1%er in Malibu.
