I am in as wellWould most likely be my first century as well. A little challenge for myself. Goal is just to finish before they decide to cut me off for going too slow.
I will be there, doing all three KOM this year.
I will be there, my 5th or 6th BA. always a fun ride!
It will be good to see the Grim Reaper again; always encourages me up the climbs.
I have been doing climbing training, but only a bit since I've been in England. Can't wait to be back in SoCal again. Heading to New Jersey first though.

Airp! I'll be in my usual la Vie Claire colors, and perhaps on a Look-Hinault bike as well this year, if the roads permit a motorcycle trip to Utah.

Just because no one else knows it's a race, that still doesn't mean I'm not winning.
I'm in as well (this will be my second year). Committed to KOM this year with several other friends.
What gear setups do you guys run at for this ride?
As I am doing hill repeat at 9-11% hill... I noticed that I might not enjoy grinding at 55-60 RPM for extended period of time...
Just wondering what the experienced riders have their gears tuned for this ride.
Thanks.

No thank you for asking this question. I was intimidated by the name and was planning to bring my recently-built triple, but a 39-27 sounds adequate to maintain a good spin. Really looking forward to this ride now. I was afraid it was going to be another Mount Laguna Massacre.

If doing BA once counts as experienced -- I had a compact front (50/34 and an 11/28) for Breatless and Heartbreak last year. I don't think I used the 28 very much (if at all) but I don't tend to spin at high rpms. Shortly after those rides, I bought a new bike with a stardard front (53/39) and a 12/27 rear. I'm planning on using that bike for the KOMs. I was a little apprehensive about Mulholland Challenege on a standard front, but I've been riding that area for the past couple months and been doing long big climbs in the Angeles and think it will work for me. I did try riding my old bike with the compact in the Mulholland area and was unhappy with the compact gearing (couldn't seem to find a gear that I liked and that would move me forward at the speed I thought I should be going). May have been an off day or because I've been riding a lot on a standard, but it convinced me to ride the KOMs with an easiest gear of 39/27.
OT: I am surprised by the number of people with compact and particularly standard cranks. Is that what manufacturers put into new bikes nowadays, or do you get those on your own for some reason? All my bikes have triples, my current road bike has a 52/42/30, and even the concept of a 53/39 crank seems a bit weird to me.
I'll be riding with the same gearing set up as last year, i.e. 50/34 (Compact) on the front and 11 - 32 on the back. Yes, I did have to put a mountain bike rear derailleur on to make it all work, but now, no problems.
Probably only use the 32 rear cog on Oak Glenn, but happy to have it there!

I'm in for BA - but could not sign up for the KOM due to the kids spring break being the same weekend as Mulholland (which is probably lucky for me anyway). So far I can do GMR to Baldy Village, which is about 1/3 of BA. I am hoping I can increase that to two times up the mountain in the next two months (and that 8000+ is going to be enough to carry me on the BA ride. I'm also signed up for the Death Ride - I know it is OT, but is anyone else doing that ride this year?
_______
Are you guys forgetting about Oak Glen? Several miles of double digit grades. I see many walking the last mile or so and don't forget the top at Onyx is 8400 Not much oxyyen up there. Bring a gear that will get you at least into the low 30 gear inch range. You will be glad you did
Two months left - Other than the weekend trips up GMR to Baldy (not doing repeats of that, yet anyway) I don't get much climbing in M-F. Just wondering what training everyone else is putting in, or is planning to put in over the next two weeks. I just want to make it to that nice long downhill at the end!
_______
Jimmy my scheduled rides if I can get them in are as follows, but with this recent snow and cold front some of these may be more difficult:
-Crystal Lake
-GMR 2x
-Oak Glen/Angeles Oaks
-MC
-Crusin the Conejo or Tour de Letapedu
-GMR / skilifts
-BA
-HH
IMO you don't have to climb all the time to prepare for climbs. Just do intervals and as Eddy once put it, "Ride lots." Look at all the Dutch victories on Alpe d'Huez. And they don't have any mountains in Holland at all.
I bought one of those silly Carmichael Training Systems dvds (haha, a complete joke IMO) on climbing, and about the only thing they did differently than the time-trail DVD (joke's on me, I bought that one too), was they raised the front wheels on their trainers, and pedaled at a lower rpm.
If you can't climb, just sit up and ride harder--that worked for me pretty well last year.
Just because no one else knows it's a race, that still doesn't mean I'm not winning.
I just do GMR twice a month and Santiago Canyon every once in a while for hills. Most of my training is just on the SART. My power numbers work out nearly the same either way and cadence is *almost* the same, so it really doesn't matter if I'm going up a mountain or not. GMR just has better scenery.

I'm in for this one and the rest of the KoM series. I understand that this one sells out, so if you're planning on this one, better sign up soon. Last year was my first spin at this one, and I found out first hand just how appropriate the name is. But before that, there's the Mulholland Challenge. And before that will be Solvang as a training ride for KoM. "I am in as well Would most likely be my first century as well." This is a daring ride for a first century. I would recommend doing the Solvang just for a training ride.
