I'm up in North County, and the bike lanes are pretty terrific up here.
Haha--Take a trip south of the border--that always makes me appreciate our roads a little more. Our streets may not be paved with gold, but at least they're paved.

hey I'm happy they cleaned the streets in Escondido on 395 today....first time in like...5yrs HAHA. Fresh bike lane paint might make me giddy!!

Yeah, it's pretty bad compared to the rest of the county, but there are still much worse places to ride on skinny tires. Texas & Arizona, for example. Those poor folks don't even have bike lanes where they live, and the motorists treat them accordingly.
Seriously, sample some of the roads in this country outside California before you blast San Diego. I've lived in a few states and our worst still beats the best of other places by a good margin. (And I'm not even talking about Mexico.)

yah. there are a few culprits out there. usually only takes once to incorporate them into the memory bank and set them to 'avoidatallcosts.' in case you forget (it def happens) or it's an unavoidable/vital link, you just gotta grin, ride carefully and bear it. makes you appreciate the good smooth stuff that much more...
Referring specifically to southbound Murphy Canyon Rd. south of Stonecrest Blvd. The pavement is unridable here except on full suspension MTBs. Until the bike lane was striped last week, drivers routinely passed at a safe distance or waited patiently behind cyclists taking the lane. Immediately after the new bike lane was striped drivers began honking, yelling, and squeezing cyclists over into the curb, not understanding why they aren't using the new bike lane and trying to act as vigilante traffic cops. This road funnels all southbound bicycle traffic coming south along the I-15 corridor into the stadium bike path. There is no alternative route.
As for the pavement in Arizona, I just got back from being a motor referee at the Valley of the Sun Stage Race. I found the pavement quality of the roads for all three stages superior to those in San Diego City.

oh gotcha. yah, that bike corridor is indispensable. haven't ridden it southbound lately. northbound...maybe 5 weeks ago. don't remember the pavement ever being great through there tho. are we talking about commuting times in the morning and afternoon?
my experience is that traffic is fairly light there except for those two time frames. just wondering because my commuting experience is that people are waay less considerate during am and pm commutes-especially the pm.
yah, nimitz ain't no picnic. westbound friars rd between mission center rd and qualcomm way is a personal no-go. hate harbor dr (both sides) south of coronado bridge area and north of west 8th st. uglyuglyugly but it's a vital link
and *gasp* there have been some improvements over the last 10 years. it still sux but it sux less. win, i guess?
not to derail the op's og post but how does he (and other commuters/riders) feel about the sharrows that have been popping up mainly in metro san diego? they seem to be placing them on medium-traffic streets, not high volume/high speed streets. the street is wide enough on murphy canyon; seems like sharrows would be better than a bike lane there. at least south of fry's/southcrest.

Southbound Catalina Blvd. between Chatsworth and Voltaire Street, is pretty awful.

I live just north of Adams Avenue in University Heights. The sharrows that are proliferating city wide have had a positive effect overall on drivers passing at a safe distance. I've been "Jerry Browned" noticeably less frequently since before they began to be installed as a provision of the CAMUTCD.
Sharrows would have been a preferred alternative to the new unridable bike lane on Murphy Canyon Rd., but the bike lanes there were linked to the installation of new bike lanes on Ruffin Rd., which when completed will be a welcome addition to a route long plagued by right hooks and drive outs to and from commercial driveways and intersections controlled only by stop signs.

adams from uni heights into kensington is one of my favorite urban stretches in the city. is it just me, or do the sharrows occasionally seem waay too far left (even beyond the reach of a 50's-60's cadillac door)?
yah. ruffin is a tough one. haven't had any problems personally but it's easy to see the potential dangers with the right hooks for sure. a lot of people driving an unfamiliar road looking for a hard to find address in confusing businessparkland.
