I haven't watched Anime in a very long time but recently wanted to see if there was anything similar to what I used to like. Jin Roh comes to mind as one of my favorites. I enjoyed the dark, gritty, realistic environment that defined Jin Roh. I also loved Ghost in the Shell for the same reasons. I got out of watching Anime because so much of it seemed to be bouncy, fantastical stories and I just couldn't get into that.
Any recommendations of movies I may like?
All the classics; Princess Mononoke; Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Metropolis etc. I wonder if anyone has seen Arriety yet? I am waiting for it to hit the local cheapo theater.
Much of my anime series comes from Sunday viewing on Adult Swim. I have always enjoyed Inuyasha, Bleach and Full-Metal Alchemist. There is a weird one right now don't know if I like - Dura-Dura. If you want ot see fantansical bouncy bouncy stuff - check out High School of the Dead. Japanese school girls with gigantic boobs! (what else!).

My anime tastes are silly and ridiculous so my favourites are "Ranma 1/2" and "All purpose cat girl Nuku Nuku". Lots of boobies in both too.
First anime I saw was Akira, at its American premiere at the 1988 Comic-con.

Actually, if you are not restricted to movies, Death Note is a very intriguing series. The manga is a very good read as well.

I just finished a back to back 2 day marathon of Ghost in the Shell seasons 1 and 2 (still shaken up about the Tachikomas BTW). One thing I can tell, just like happened with Fullmetal Alchemist, is that the series are far better than the movies. I'm also looking for something along the lines of Ghost in the Shell, if I find anything good I'll report here.
PS: I'm gonna look into some international forums I used to visit since there's more chance they get stuff that never reaches American shores.

The first time I saw Akira was on a bootleg VHS tape that one of the guys in my college dorm got from his older brother. Japanese audio, no subs, but we got the idea. Fantastic.
