You will need to replace those chainrings with some that are a bit more cross-friendly. If I were you id ditch both of them and the FD and run a single 42t ring and the wide range cassette in back.

the 11t on the cassette, a 46t chainring will be fine, common change for cross racing
    Compton runs a 44..
just get another chainring to swap out ..
    a 50t is what I run when I've got a 13t .. on my touring rig.

of course Nobody can judge what you really need with out knowing
what the course designer has planned for you.

I am not a race kind of guy. It will probably see more action as a back-up road bike and Katy Trail cruser with a little smooth fast single track riding for fun. I do kind of like the idea of running it as a 1 by 8 though. I mighst think about that.

Not bad, not bad at all. You will have to let us know what you think of the Midge Bars with the CX setup. I am contemplating using that on my Jake. You have plans on racing it like this? I am going to try out racing the local series for fun this year and if I get "bit" by the bug then I may invest in something more substantial, maybe even build up my own race bike like the Chinese Carbons from GengFu or whatever they are.
