This year, I want to break out of my commuting-only rut and get back to pleasure rides again - hopefully with my wonderful wife. Secondary goal is to keep myself away from the sawbones - my right knee is getting pretty bad when walking, but I can cycle without pain, and the doc said to keep strengthening the quads.

2011 total was 752mi. My 2012 goal is to more than double that and raise my mph average.

The local Oz Bicycle club has their Wicked Wind Century in late May with distances of 25/50/62 & 100mi. I am eyeing the century or metric century at present. I did this ride in 1975 & 1976 and would like to do my third century this year.

The great thing about cycling is that when you're first starting out, the results are directly proportional to the amount of riding you put in. The more you ride, the faster/fitter/thinner/stronger you get. Then, as you reach the point of diminishing returns, you're already hooked and you find other things to keep you interested, such as training for big events. And if that doesn't keep you going, there's always n+1...

BTW I just crossed the 300mi. mark so I am on track for that. My mph average is a little down but will rise with warmer weather.

Make a plan and follow it

Living up north with long winters it is so easy to do nothing and lose what fitness may have been developed the prior season. I would like to maintain fitness over the winter as a goal. Its a lot of work to recover from a long duration of being inactive with a big appetite. If gaining weight fast is a skill, I have it. I need to make a plan and follow it or I will repeat the cycle once again.

Last year I did over 10,000 miles. I don't have a particular mileage goal, but I guess that this year's total will be similar. My principal goal this year was to take out a licence and start racing, which I've done. Now I suppose the goal ought to be to win one. That may prove more challenging. LOL
