Bianchi Axis Upgrade

I have a 2006 Bianch Axis which I use for commuting and I have now covered 6000 miles on it. Its getting to the point where I need to start to think about replacing the drivetrain as the teeth on the crank are looking very worn now and the rear derailleur (XT) seems to have trouble holding gears no matter how it is adjusted, so its probably tired. The rims have worn down to their wear grooves.

Its been a great bike solidly taking to and from work through the worst of British weather and I cannot fault it, the commute is half on road and half off road along a hard packed track.

It would be a good time to upgrade I think, the bike is pretty much stock except for mudguards and a stand.

The question is.... Is the Axis frame long lived enough to be worth considerably upgrading the parts. I am thinking of Ultegra drivetrain with a Hope external BB and a set of Mavic Open Pros. This comes to around £695. Having looked at Ultegra equipped bikes they are all around £1500-£2000 so I think it probably is worth it.

Any thoughts???

If the bike fits well and does all that you want it to do, the upgrade could be worthwhile.

However, the economics are not favorable. The restored and upgraded bike will not have the resale value of a newer bike. That is only an issue if you need or want to sell the bike during the next 5 years.

Upgrading does provide the opportunity to further improve a bike you already enjoy and find useful. Better wheels and drivetrain will make a large improvement.

The Axis should have Easton Aluminum frame tubing. I would inspect it very carefully for any damage or signs of fatigue. Aluminum can crack from fatigue, this often occurs near the bottom bracket or along the chainstays.

I'm a believer in upgrading a bike you like as long as the frame is in good shape. At 6000 miles I would expect most frames to still be in good shape. If it fits and you are happy with the way it rides, resale value should not be a consideration....upgrade at will. If you are indifferent about the way the bike feels, then you're better off selling it and buying a new one.

The frame appears to be in fine condition, the bike hasn't been abused. Perhaps I'll go for a lesser upgrade and see if it will hit 10,000!

I would upgrade the wheels first. These can provide an immediate benefit and can be transferred to future bikes.
