The Mystery Bike Revealed; or Look What BG has!!
Some of you may recall me making remarks about a secret bike/project for the last year. Well I put my foot down a few months ago and ordered the last few parts and finished it off.
I now have a carbon fiber bike!!! It is a '09 K2 Mainframe 6.0 and I put a Kenisis straight blade fork on it. First one since I had a '95ish Mongoose that was a really a warrantied frame that we could find nothing wrong with.
OK OK Pic or two then the details.
A shop had stolen the OEM fork from this and a friend at work got a good deal on it for the components then gave me what he said and I thought was a good deal on the frame.
The parts are as follows. '89ish Chorus cranks, calipers, RD (the Tiwanese drillium version), and FD
Shimano 600 6spd UG hubs upgrades to 7spd HG with Mavic Special Sport tubular rims.
Cane Creek hidden HS with a Specialized stem and Nitto B115 bars
Shimano barends in friction mode.
Tektro brake levers, K2 seatpost and that RL saddle
Yes I know the frame is not C&V but just think of it a Retro steel with STI with a twist
I took it out for a spin today but the weather having been nice all day started to change as I left the house and stout wind came up. I valiantly rode on and simply could not wait for the turn around point. Mechanically aside from the BB lockring loosening up, a few whacks with my shoe and the Campi T wrench got me moving again, everything was fine mechanically.
As for the ride... UH WOW! I never rode that Mongoose much so I can't compare it to that, but this bike is nothing like I expected. Looking at those fat tubes and huge joints I expected a Cannondale like ride but this was very nice. Because of the wind the out bound and base legs were pretty sluggish but once I turned onto final and I could breath a bit better, both me and the bike perked up a bit. On the loop I take of just under 20miles there is really one hill and the bike seemed to climb (well I am a bit rusty from a long layoff bit I did give it my best) pretty well and it seemed to absorb most small to medium bumps pretty we. Over all I give it a high 9 on a scale of 1 to 10 but I am not going to have a fire sale on any steel just yet.
BG's Vodka Slurm Gimlet 1 1/2 13.oz bottles Slurm, 13.5 Oz Lime Vodka stir with ice and serve keep remainder chilled for later.

That's quite the selection of parts BG. Kind of reminds of that sub 10 lbs carbon bike that had the Jubilee RD on it and dt shifters.

I'm sorry, but you're gonna spend eternity in hell now.
Just the way it is, but you probably know this already.

Chorus RD ("Taiwanese drillium version") - I like that
That's quite the looker - all that silver and black really work well together. What did you end up with weight-wise?

This is why I love this forum... not afraid to get a modern carbon bike, not afraid to put 80's Campy on it with friction shifting. Ride what you like, right? This bike is great, BG.

Hi Everyone Thank You! I am not sure the weight I don't happen to have a scale but it is noticably lighter than most of my bikes.

If the Jetsons had a road bike, that would be it. Cool frame for a newer one.
Hey, can you give us a good guess on the weight....use a bathroom scale if you have to.

At first when I clicked on this thread and saw the first picture, I was like "hmmmm..."
And then when I read the rest, it all made sense -- classy components on a modern CF frame. I'm digging it.

I find that k2 pretty elegant. Although I've had and enjoyed CF myself. The proflex however, is a beast and I love that it almost flaunts it.

OH I just want to add something that should have been in the OP. I built this with these parts for two reasons. 1 being economics. I had everything but the fork hanging around waiting to be use. 2 I figured if I was going to give carbon fiber a fair shake I would use components I was comfortable with and knew how they felt and work. That way all my attention would be on the frame/fork and not trying to figure out some new brifter style or goofy compact crank.

See, this is the thing with carbon fiber. At first, you're just
chipping a little, and "you can stop whenever you want."
Then, one day, you wake up in some back alley, somewhere,
with a terrible headache and a sore nose, and you realize that
the life you once had is gone, along with everyone you cared

Cool bike. Interesting that it is a K2. I think of K2 as a ski company, and back in the day I skiied primarily K2s. The classic vintage K2 ski graphic is third from the left in the below pic. I was thinking how groovy your bike would look with that paint job.

The front shock is electronic, which was crazy state of the art shiznit back then. Take a close look at pic 4, you can see the control panel on the side of the control box. So what got you woozy 'bout the rear shock? Did I mention that your build is SHWEET?!
