Well,I think ive figured out what the popping is coming from on my bike. The guys at my LBS said to put my original back wheel back on and I did and so far no popping.I know a few of you suggested it could be my freehub and I wished i'd tried that 1st,anyway i'll ride it the rest of the week to make sure there is no more popping.I figured $640 for a set of wheels would get me more than 500 mile.Silly me..

have someone go over the wheel and it should be fairly evident if it is the hub, or spokes. Did you use the same cassette or did the original wheel have its own cassette on?

OP, kindly update us when your Phil Wood hub issue is resolved.

PW FSC hubs had a bad freewheel when they first came out several years ago. PW had to replace/modify many of these hubs. This was supposedly an "old", resolved issue for years now. I wonder if you had the bad luck to get an original, unmodified FSC hub in your built rear wheel.

I'd really like to know if PW's $400 FSC hubs are fixed yet, or not.

Im probably not going to use those wheels on this trip ive got coming up.I just dont trust them anymore.I didnt spend over 600 bucks on new wheels just so I can send them back to be worked on. I will update when i get the wheel back if I dont sell em first.

My LBS called Phil Wood and they said it sounds like the pawls inside the freehub are not engaging every now and then. Now here is the kicker.Phil Wood was going to send them a new back wheel for me but Chris at the LBS told them dont worry about it,we'll just send his back and get it repaired.Anyway I would expect something like this to happen to the wheel on a Kmart bike but not a PW hub and i dont think i'll be going back to that bike shop after this has been taken care of.

I must admit I don't follow why the store decided on that decision. If this happened actually as you describe it, shouldn't you contact ps directly to accept the wheel offer, if that's what you want....

I don't understand this. Was PW offering to send a replacement HUB, and the LBS just trying to get out of rebuilding a WHEEL that they sold you, with a (now apparently) defective PW hub?

BTW the pawls issue sounds pretty much the same as the original FSC freewheel issue I mentioned in #29.

That sounds quite strange that Phil Wood would actually do that since they're not into the business of making entire wheels... rims, spokes, nipples, rim tapes, etc. Lots of personal preference with those things. They don't even make wheel skewers for their own hubs! I honestly wouldn't feel comfortable accepting a freebie wheel without knowing what's included. The problem you're having is not with any of those wheel components but with their actual hub. Rebuilding a wheel doesn't take much and your shop hopefully has someone experienced with wheel building. It makes sense for P.W. to replace (or fix) at no charge that particular component: their hub. But an entire wheel?? There must be a misunderstanding somewhere... I have the feeling the conversation may have gone something like this...

LBS - Hey Phil! The hub is making an awful clicking noise.

P.W. - OK, no problem! We'll send a new "freewheel" (another commonly used word for a freehub)

LBS - What?? A "free" wheel? - Oh no, you don't have to do that! We'll just send the old freehub and you can just fix it and send it back.

P.W. - Well, if that's OK with you guys, sure no problem! Send it back and we'll fix it at no charge.

I agree with your comments re. PW. Perhaps they are transitioning into selling complete wheels now.

You may be surprised how many USA LBSs are no longer competent or willing to rebuild wheels these days. A lot of the minority of LBSs that still do "build wheels" actually contract them to someone else. They would rather sell you a new wheel. Many LBSs now do a significant amount of etailing (internet sales) and consequently focus less on service.

MY LBS tried to get them to send the part but you need a special tool to do the job correctly and they dont sell that tool.

For me, any creaks or pops like you describe have been BB issues in an aluminum frame.

    Congrats. Looks like problem solved.

Unfortunately, I think my new (two months old) road bike may have developed a similar problem. Three "pops" so far. I'm certain it's the freehub. Always happens when I'm out of the saddle, starting from a dead stop, noticeable slip of the drivetrain. Grrrrrr.

Took my wheel out and no popping, so I guess the Phil Wood came through.
