Maybe you could argue that in the current system someone who finishes 6/11 20+ times is more qualified to be Cat3 versus someone who finishes 10th/100. I wouldn't.
I don't know how many 100+ fields you've been in, but if you were outside of the top 10 you might as well have been anywhere in the field, unless the sprint is 10 people wide or something.

I would think that if they gave points 20 deep in a 100-person field, you'd get a bunch of people sprinting from mid-pack for 18th place, which is not a race I would want to be part of.

Don't bother upgrading past Cat3, then. You wouldn't want to hurt yourself.

Florida Points Series goes 25 places deep. It's not that unusual.

    It's a crazy complicated formula. http://www.usacycling.org/usa-cycling-rankings-faq.htm

The last part is all that matters.

Q: How can I improve my ranking?
A: To improve ranking, a rider must beat riders who are currently ranked stronger.

That's why racing with stronger riders can improve the ranking. My masters numbers are way better than my cat race numbers mainly due to my philosophy of pedaling to the end. I'll pass 20 guys (pretty sure all of them are ranked higher than me) who called it early once they realized Thurlow won. It all doesn't mean much although it does score points with my wife. Cheers

(insert joke about forwarding my USAC rankings to your wife here)

Unless they include all the DNF riders in the results these rankings are worthless and useless because if I finish a RR in 40th place out of 100 starters but half the filed is dropped or doesnt make the time cut and only 50 riders appears in the results I will only beat 10 guys where in reality I finished ahead of 60 guys. So pretty much useless ... but what else would you expect from USAC

I don't know that much about how they gather results but I do remember to stick around to check them. I realized at Cyclo-vets, I was standing at the start/finish all day, that they have a lot of issues to deal with what with people complaining about other riders, crashes, stragglers etc.
