Fattest rear tire for a Santana Soverign

Came stock with 700x 28s, been riding 700x25s for road rides. Now want something fatter for a GAP/C&O tour. Plenty of room in the front but who has tried 700x32 Schwalbes as a rear tire...hoping some measure more like 700x30ish?

Riding pal of mine has 32 gator skins on hIs sovereign. No room for fenders.

I had a Sovereign for a short time. I tried a set of Performance 700x35 tires on it and they just fit. No room for fenders, though.

BTW, we rode part of the GAP on our loaded triplet using 700x35. Worked great. 700x32 would be the minimum I'd go on a tandem for the GAP. When the trail gets soft (rain, etc.) narrower tires will tend to sink in and make riding challengin.

FYI, the Schwalbe Marathon Racer comes in a 700x30. The vintage I have measures 700x29, but I see they've updated the tire for 2012 so the new ones may measure differently. In any case, it's a good option if 700x32 is a bit too big.

    Conti has a 700x30ish tire.

They recently came out with the Gatorskin in 700x32. I measured it and it was only about 2mm bigger than the 700x28, so it runs pretty small for a 700x32. I even fit it on a road bike designed for a 700x23. If the 700x28 fits with extra room, the 700x32 will fit. My stoker likes having a little extra tire/cush under her. Might be an option for ya.
