Gary Fisher question

I bought a used Gary Fisher a few years ago at a pawn shop. I didn't really understand fitting a bike to me, but it fits so i got lucky. I think it is a NAPA model silver series.
I am just now getting around to doing anything with it and have been looking it over more carefully. I have noticed that the gears seem pretty worn and has what has been described to me as "indexed steering". The teeth on the sprockets are sloped and worn pretty bad on one side.
It has a Shimano 101 front derailleur
Shimano Acera rear derailleur
Pro Max brakes with Shimano V brake levers
Shimano 201 cranks and rear hub
Matrix 750 rims.
It also has a seat that seems to have a spring or shock in the stem.

I am going to need tires soon, but these are good for a little while. I may need a new chain and sprockets and need new steering head bearings and races.

Is this bike worth what it will take to fix up or would I be better off selling/trading it and buying something like the Specialized Hardrock I bought for my wife.
I am about to be 54 and my wife and I won't be doing any hard core mountain biking- probably mild trails at the worst.

There are forums that have "Pay It Forward" threads where riders give away parts they don't need anymore. I managed to get a dropper post($200), 180mm Rotor($25), Wider handlebars($30) all for FREE. If you do some research, you just might find people giving away parts that you will need. A new bike is great, but it really all depends on your budget.
