On my way to school, I pass by a row of five-six trees. Apparently the bird who has a nest in one of these trees doesn't like me. I'm not sure if he just moved in there or if he just started noticing me (I've been riding to school for a few months now), but it's getting scary.

On Tuesday he squawked and I looked back and saw him flying above my head, in an attacking pose. He sort of flew up higher and then went back to his tree. Today while coming home, I heard a LOUDER squawk and I looked back and saw him flying full speed at me! I sprinted away, but still. Why does he hate me so much and what can I do?

I was taken down once hard by a duck. It spooked and flew into the rear triangle of my bike. I ended up with blood and feathers all over my campy novo record rear derailleur and my front wheel was toast. I guess I was lucky I didn't get into trouble for hunting ducks out of season . . . .

Did you kill any squirrels by any chance? The bird might be upset about that!

I have had more close calls with stupid pigeons than with squirels or any other type of animal. The wait till you are within 20 ft and then (while your doing 20+mph) try to fly away. I nearly clobbered three pigeons in the last 40 miles of riding I did. Hard breaking combined with swerving kept me from demolishing the dumb birds.

Yeah. It's a she bird with eggs about to hatch. You are too close to the young ones.

This time of year some birds are aggressive when you get to close to their nests. Here I've seen mockingbirds, grackles, and cactus wrens try to shoo people including cyclists away from their nests.

Grackles are mean. I had one dive bomb me from her nest over a mailbox. I was just stopping to shove some letters in the mail slot when I had a thunk to the helmet.

Another reason to wear your helmet, I guess!

Somebody posted here once about decapitating a squirrel when it's little noggin got through the front spokes and it was guillotined against the fork blade, and I have had that vision every time a bunny darts across my path, very close call 2 days ago, amidst a veritable bunnypalooza.
