Hello all,
I am having problems with my Shimano RX 100 brifters. I recently alligned my rear derailer. I find that although shifting down gears is fine, as soon as I try to shift up a gear it skips all cogs and goes to the upper limit(smallest rear cog), set by the limit screw. Does anyone have any advice? I think it may be too much tension in the cable but am not sure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated thankyou.

I have flushed the mechanism a few times with wd 40. Will try again today. I have read that pulling apart the brifter is a no no. However if it come to it will changing the spring help? Or should I use a specialized lubricant be the first course of action. Is there a non - discontinued shimano brifter which I can replace the rx100 with?
Ok i have talked to a few people and read a bunch. Flushing it didn't work because the ratchet tooth was broken. The most common cause is the gunking up of components from under use, rust and dirt. The best thing to do for anyone else who has this problem is to degrease(not with wd40) over a period of a day while moving the components from time to time. THen make sure you re lubricate as well or thing will start falling apart.
As for me I dont want to give up on the Rx 100 STI and components are no longer produced by shimano, so, if anyone has an old RX 100 or 105 7 speed right hand shifter please let me know and I will make you an offer. Check out ebay seller "eeforme" -- he overhauls Shimano brifters. I bought a set of 3x7 RSX brifters from him earlier this year; they have been flawless. I recommend him highly.

If I was you I'd read the writing on the wall and get some proper brifters.
You can make Campy brifters work with your Shimano derailleur with a Shiftmate. Alternatively, 8spd Campy brifters and a matching rear derailleur will shift your 7spd cassette perfectly, since it's the same 5mm spacing.
Not sure if there's a Shiftmate for SRAM, but then I'm not sure either how superior Doubletap is to STI.
IMO it's plain as day that Ergo is vastly mechanically superior to STI, and the new hidden cable STI is doubtless an even more horrendously complex rat's nest of bent and pressed steel plate. Yuck.
Bona fides: I've overhauled (complete disassembly) STI and Ergo, and for the record, IMO Shimano stuff is generally better* - except when it comes to brifters.
*Not ultimately better - Campy is porn and SRAM is light, but better in an all-things-considered, average scenario kinda way.
