    Need clothing advice

I've got to get kind of dressed up but I don't want to wear a tie. I've got black shoes, tan pants, and a blue blazer. What would go good under the blazer? Would a black polo shirt be ok?
This is a serious question. As you can tell, I don't get out much.

A botton down shirt would be better, no tie needed. White would be better since it is a blue blazer. Blue is a harder color to match but can go well with grey slacks if you had any. The tan slacks will do.

Try not to mix the blue blazer with black shirt of any kind since it will look like you are trying too hard to blend them and it won't work.
    Zeal is its own excuse.

I hope this isn't for tonight, because you need a new shirt. The advice from Big_e is solid. Grey slacks and a white dress shirt are ideal. The tan slacks will work.

I'd suggest a Borat Banana Hammock, and a black Bolero Vest, and a pink beret. For footwear, try clownshoes. I guarantee you a unique fashion statement, that way. If you want to go formal, add a bowtie.

I'd go with the most formal suit of them all. Best of all, everyone has one. Your birthday suit.

    Well, despite what Tom sez,

If you are fit at yer core, if you know what I mean, and I'm sure you do, a polo shirt would be Excellent!

    If yer a porker.

Ya wear a nice button down medium blue oxford shirt.

Pressed and buttoned all the way.

Get down to cards or business or both making a moment rolling up yer sleeves could work.

Or not. Stay buttoned up. Wear the shirt.

If you're wearing a blue blazer, the black shoes are a faux pas. You should be wearing reddish brown shoes and belt.

Probably won't be my only faux pas but thanks for the advice.

By the way, if you happen to have a nice pair of Bass or Sperry Topsiders, then those and Khaki look pants, a white turtleneck and the blue blazer isn't a bad look. You'll look like you're at a Yacht Club party. I'm not teasing this time, by the way.

But what if the brithday suit is old, wrinkled and saggy like mine?

I'm sure a specialist could help you take it in. As with any suit, you shouldn't try steam ironing it on your own...

Take it in and have it steam pressed.

Or you could get it steam punked. Wordbiker might be able to help with that.

White shirt is the safest, pale blue would also be great - and yes, no tie= button down collar.

The brown shoes would be great with the jacket and pants you described, but I think black can work in a pinch - but yes, match the shoes and belt. You'll want a belt to complete the look so if you don't have one that matches your shoes (doesn't have to be an exact match, just a close brown or basic black), buy one - a decent leather belt shouldn't cost very much.

Small details mean a lot - since you;re buying from scratch - if you wear a ring or watch, try and get a belt with a buckle in the same tone as your jewelry - brass or gold tone for gold bling, or a stainless steel buckle with silver tone jewelry.
Oh great, now my post makes no sense.
