Commuting with tablet/ereader in pannier?

Hi Everyone,

Did a quick search but didn't see any previous thread. If I missed it, please free to direct me to that discussion.

I am wondering what everyone does about commuting with a tablet/ereader. I have a Kindle Touch and haven't brought it with me to work because I am afraid of damaging the device. I have a pannier on my bike rack but I am worried that it will get broken on the ride over. I do have a great case on it. Is that enough? Am I being overprotective?

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts!

Ortlieb makes a laptop bag for just this purpose.

Get a zipper style, cushioned, case and you should be good to go. I would not hesitate to take my wife's Nook in it's binder.

I prefer that stuff in a backpack, less shock.

Having said that I am about to go on a multi-month tour with a netbook in my panniers.

I bring my laptop all the time, in a foam sleeve w/ a velcro flap. A tablet has even fewer moving parts to jar.

I keep my laptop and Vita in my backpack in their own compartments.

I use a padded case for my Kindle, and usually put in in my backpack when I take it with.

I take my Macbook Pro to work every day in my pannier (in the rain too). No problem. The pannier has a compartment, which is nice for making it easy to slide it in even when there's already a bunch of crap in there. Electronics are made to be used. If you don't take your Kindle all the places you'd take a paperback, what good is it? And the Kindle touch has no moving parts. You will _not_ be able to jostle it into disrepair in a pannier, I guarantee it.

I transport an HP Touchpad in the side pannier. Just half wrap it in a small towel and away I go.

I commuted daily for years with a laptop in a neoprene sleeve and a Kindle with a protective cover in my panniers. No problems.

Lots of people have taken netbooks or even laptops on cross country tours. Neoprene sleeve to give it just a little more protection, maybe a plastic shopping bag to keep it dry(er), and you're good to go!

I agree, I have a zippered pouch for my Netbook, and nothing really for my tablet. Sometimes I'll slip my tablet into the pouch with my Netbook. But when I'm not taking both I'll just slip my tablet into my top bag and not worry about it. Today I got caught in the rain (twice after the second time I put my waterproof pannier cover over everything. And my Netbook came through without a problem.

Sometimes I'll slip my tablet into a plastic/air cushioned mailer envelope that I carry maps and whatnot in. Other than that I don't do anything special for either.

Oh, my Netbook in it's case I usually just "drop" into one of my pannier bags, sometimes I'll put it in the top bag.

I carry an iPad every day, no special pocket in my panniers or anything, except that the panniers are waterproof. It has a leather case and I put it in a small neoprene laptop sleeve. That's plenty of protection.

I carry an iPad back and forth to work every day in this. It barely fits and pokes the sides out a bit, but it works. I've been using it over a year now. Once I forgot to buckle the buckle under the bottom and my iPad spilled out into the street and slid about 20ft. Two cars went over it, but straddled it. The case got scratched up a bit, but the iPad was fine.

My laptop always goes in my backpack, in a neoprene sleeve. But a laptop is a complicated thing, with lots of fragile parts.

My Kindle4 e-reader is another matter entirely. Not much to go wrong with such a relatively simple piece of technology. Smart phones are probably more fragile. I often just throw the Kindle in my rather large seat bag, when heading to coffee shops and the like. It travels just fine.

i have rode with my mac in my bag for a couple years. i have it in a sleeve and then a separate larger bag.
