Ok, so this is my first time ever using a forum (so bare with me), but I am looking for some help. I have recently gotten into an all around bicycle hobby with my husband, and we both have decided to work on older vintage bikes. But to the point... I bought an AMF Roadmaster Discoverer and I know nothing about this bike (like I said I am kinda new at this). I really wanted to build my own cruiser, but now I'm a bit worried I would be destroying a classic by repainting/ reparting it. I do not know the year it was made, value, etc. And I have not been able to find anything that was of much help on the internet. So if anyone has any info or opinions your help would be much appreciated.

These are pretty common, so you are not destroying a classic by changing it to suit your needs. I would value it at about $50-$75 so no big money involved in my opinion. I would guess it was from the mid 1960's(?). Welcome to the forums and be sure to stop back with any questions or project updates. We are friendly/helpful bunch.

Thanks a bunch! Makes me feel better about wanting to paint it. And I only paid $35 for it woohoo! I guess that means its time to get started on it. And thanks again for the info I'll def post updates

The rear rack in good condition can fetch $75 alone believe it or not, so while it's not a rare bike some of the parts are ( in good condition ). I have a similar bike ( Very rough shape ) that I wanted to build a modern retro cruiser out of it, but the chrome parts are to far gone for cleaning and need to much labor for sandblasting & painting to make it a worth while build at this point. I started to look for replacement parts when I found a auction for the rear rack but it sold for $75 + $13 shipping and it was used. This is the second bike I have had like this in two years ( even the same color ) so I am going to hold onto it and see if I can find another one or at least some of the chrome parts.

Pics don't show reality very well, but from what I see, it appears in reasonably good shape. I'd try a good cleaning followed by a bit of polishing wax. It may come back nicely. The fenders and crank have a bit of rust. I have used an oxalic acid bath on worse with decent results. There are plenty of posts in the archives about the use of oxalic acid so do some searching.

I agree the rust doesn't look bad at all, some Oxalic acid or Navel Jelly and some bronze wool will do wonders to that bike. I would try and clean the paint up also instead of repainting it, pick up some polishing compound and a good cleaner wax and go to town.
