Now I'm Nervous- New Wheel Purchase

Last week I bit the bullet on a new set of wheels. A set of Mavic Aksium 2011 on closeout at Jenson to replace the stock ALX-200 that will not stay true. Weight was not a concern when I purchased them, I just wanted something cheap and durable.

Anyway, I just checked the tracking information for the shipment, and the package weight is listed as 8.9lbs I sure hope most of that is packaging.

Can't wait to mount them up and see how they ride.

That is indeed the packing weight. Just guessing off the top of my head, but I'd say that set weighs about 1900 grams. When I ordered my Mavics, they shipped with skewers.

The weights listed on the Mavic site are most likely pretty accurate. Fret not.

The wheels will be just fine. But don't expect a "Holy Cow!" moment. You probably won't notice any difference in the ride.

They're just shy of 1800g without skewers. Good wheels IMO. I run mine on my winter/rain bike and they're as smooth and true as the day I got them (about 2500 miles ago). The only issue is that some of the back spokes twist out of line, but I don't even bother straightening them now. I love how they ride with GP4000s. I've got Dura Ace C24s on my other bike with Ultremo HDs, and although they're a fair bit lighter and stiffer, the ride is a little bit harsher.

Great wheels IMHO. And Jenson had one of the best price out there. C24 would ride a little comfier with SAME tire (I have both...) It rolls pretty smooth too.

I was being somewhat dramatic, but mostly just excited to get the new wheels. Whether or not it makes a difference in the ride is irrelevant, minimizing the frequent maintenance of the old wheels and increasing reliability were my main goals. Plus who doesn't like getting new shiny bits for their bike, even if it doesn't affect the "performance".

FYI - I have these wheels, and they do not weigh 8 lbs.

They weigh about 6lbs. And the other 2lbs is the packaging.

They are outstanding wheels for the money. You are going to be very happy with them.

These are very good reasons to get wheels.

When my Mavic Ksyriums shipped, the packaging was listed at 26.2 pounds. After receiving them, I can safely say FedEx was wrong.

That's because shippers use a "virtual" weight when dealing with large packages that don't weigh a whole lot. Bike wheels are usually considered oversized items due to the measurements of the boxes they are in.

This, I shipped some wheels last week, and it was 12lbs or so, with box, packing etc. so don't worry. Wheels were in the 1500g range Because for wheels/bikes you're usually charged by dimensional weight, I've sometimes not even bothered to weigh the box, just enter in some weight. They're charging by the large box size, you could probably double/triple the weight and the shipping cost would be the same.
