On giving up:
Everyone knows that Christopher Columbus discovered the New World for Spain on his first voyage. But few people realize that on his 4th voyage, Columbus gave up, turned back and sailed for home; within 10 miles of where he could have discovered the Pacific Ocean.
Anyone know why? I mean there's no good reason to kill oneself, but does anyone know FOR SURE why he did it?

Horrible news.

There have been reports about depression. Last year, he drove his SUV over a cliff under very suspicious circumstances. Lots of room for conjuncture here, from concussion related, steroid related, etc. Bottom line is that he mostly likely felt trapped and isolated and hopeless for whatever reason and this was, to him, his only way out. If you see signs of depression in anyone, reach out to them. Your smile, or kind word might be so much larger than you know. I have lost an uncle and several friends to suicide. It is a senseless waste of precious life.

Yeah, my wife and I both suffered with depression, I was lucky enough to be able to deal with it on my own with no meds, it was hard but the mind is a very strong tool. My wife had a hard time dealing with it so after giving it a try with no meds she decided to go ahead and take the meds, and shes been doing great for more than a few years, no signs or symtoms since. =0) I do agree, suicide is a senseless waste of precious life, and thats why it pisses me off when I hear about it.

I think one of the most tragic parts of suicide are the people left behind asking "why?". For there really is no answer, sadly. The only person that knows the answer took it with them and if they actually left a note, can it be trusted since the person who wrote it was so isolated, depressed, intoxicated, hurt, whatever.

NYT said that Seau had asked to have his brain put into that football player brain study, and then the reporter drew the parallel to Duerson shooting himself in the chest rather than the head. If Jr left a note it wasn't referenced in the article I read.
Jr was the *8th* guy from the 94 Chargers to die before age 45.
I read this topic last night and was actually wondering why a suicide would want to target the chest. Came back to post that I would pick the head, why would anyone want to aim for the chest, and here there was already an answer.
Unfortunately it probably left the poor guy with a few 'oops, why did I do that?' moments. Very sad way to go. Not that there is an upbeat and happy way to go.
