I've never noticed red marks on my shoulders (even without a base layer) and, like I said, it's still easy enough to take a leak. Doing a #2 is harder, but hopefully I'm using a toilet instead of having to squat by the side of the road.
Bio breaks with bibs are easier if you wear full-zip jerseys.
Plus they make you look more "euro-pro", or whatever the 41 calls it.

I like food.
On a serious note I had a pair of shorts and never used them after trying them once and have never used them after that (put them in the donation bag). Bibs just work better for me.
I got a pair of bibs from Hammer and did a century in them. I never wore them again. The constant pull on the shoulders was pure torture by mile 70 or so. I have no problems with shorts at all. I don't think I will be wasting anymore money on bibs as I see no advantage to them even if they didn't torture me.

so you have people, say around 6 foot, that wear medium shorts no problem and then try medium bibs and whoa! major pressure on the crotch and shoulders because the length is all wrong. and I'm sure there is a group of folks on the heavy side who wear large shorts no problem, but large bibs are too tall.

If only we had the technology for adjustable shoulder straps. Or just cut them off and be done with it.

Bikes: Old steel race bikes, old Cannondale race bikes, less old Cannondale race bike, crappy old mtn bike
Well, thanks for the warning. I'll stay away from this dangerous gateway drug, then. Truth is, I wasn't going to experiment with bibs anyway. I'm not Andre the Giant, and I'm not a triathlete, either, so I won't pee on my bike. (Plus, the pants I already own are comfortable enough and I've already paid for them.)
Don't believe everything you think.
I prefer my shorts by a mile. But maybe my club bibs just suck. That's probably it...
