I got a Spinergy Rev-X (cue the hate, but I like how it rides and looks) for a very good trade, and after commuting for a few weeks with it, decided to use a spoked front wheel and keep the Spinergy for a future build. I didn't like holding my breath every time I hit a bump in the road and crosswinds were murder.

I think the realization that your wheels may fail at any time adds to the terrifying experience of bombing downhill, brakeless.

Why haven't these things exploded in popularity yet?

I see what you did there.

I would probably use it on the track, but not for road riding. Also, there are different models of Rev-X; after the first batch, they started adding features which increased the strength of the wheel.
